I was quoting an E type jag bonnet, they weigh I think 230lbs in steel form, the CF bonnet is 35 lbs...
The Stazz will prob be a lot less.....

all we need is someone to make moulds of the bonnet and the quater panels (the bonnet might need some al reinforcment) not sure how much weight this would save, but yeah it could be ballanced by replacing the hatch with perspex (unless you want to bring the COG rearward)
lighter wheels would also be a very good approach, this would also lessen the gyroscopic effect of the wheels (infact lightening the flywheel would have some degree of affect on the cars handling aswell)
TD05; yeah sorry man i got carried away with figures (my staz is in Melb and i haven't taken the bonnet off in ages) i didn't even really question the weight until someone else mentioned it.

So here is some food for thought have you lightened the flywheel
as 1 Kg removed from a 250 mm dia has the same effect on acceleration
as about 35 Kgs removed from the car in first or about 12 Kgs from the car in second of cause the effect reduces the higher the gear
and why is this ? the engine has accelerate that 1 Kg more times in lower gears
In my N/A 2.6 sigma I run a 5 Kg steel flywheel
I think for a starion it would be closer to 6 Kg
I’ve given some thought to weight reduction in regards to swapping out heavier parts rather than removing incidental weight. What’s the situation regarding the follow?
- Replace rear hatch glass with a lighter material (ie. Perspex)
- Replace exhaust piping with a lighter metal material
- Replace bonnet with a lighter material (ie. Carbon fibre)
- Space saver tyre instead of regular (also get some boot space back!)
- Replace battery with a lighter battery (is this even possible?)
- And then there’s having an alloy engine!
- No fat chicks!
What’s feasible (granted everything is feasible if you throw enough money at it) without an excessive budget?

bonnet, fibreglass yes, cf no, but someone needs to do it
you could use that tyre in a can stuff
battery, yes smaller so i guess lighter
alloy engine, sr20det, yes
incar phil i think it was got some cf doors made that were a fair bit lighter

Fibreglass is what u make your mould from
after you get your plug ( bonnet - gaurd - flare ? ) made and this could be a standard component or made from wood plaster or car bog make it mint as your mould will take all or any imperfections
next step is to wax the plug so the f/glass will come away
there are heavier gel coats that can be used for the mould
after glassing your plug about 6 mm thick and it has gone off
remove it clean it up wax it your ready to go
I made a boot from f/glass a few years back messy job but not to hard to work with

Thought I might give fibreglassing ago, do a few small bits, Staz bonnet will be one thing later on, mostly because I want to do something different, and its easier if the whole bonnet is fibre.
May not pan out, but I want to give it a go, Ive found a place to buy the fibre, resin, tools etc for a reasonable price too.

ive got a guy here in nelson who is willing to make a mould of my bonnet, would any of you other kiwis be interested in a fibreglass bonnet?
he reckons he can do it so we can still have all the scoops too AND they will actually work :D
Yeah let me know the price! I may want custom vents, but Ill pay extra to have mine customised afterwards. But yeah Im interested if the price is reasonable.
