130km/h speedo limit sought

THE Victorian Government wants to restrict speedometers on all new cars in Australia at 130km/h.
Premier Steve Bracks today said Transport Minister Peter Batchelor would submit the proposal to the Australian Transport Council, a meeting of state and federal transport ministers, in Brisbane next Friday.
The debate over speed has been reignited by Ford Performance Vehicles' release of a turbocharged six-cylinder Falcon - the Typhoon - which is capable of well over 200km/h.
Speaking on radio 3AW, Mr Bracks said the plan to peg speedometers was the first step in a campaign to impose a limit on the top speed.
He said Mr Batchelor would call for speedometers to be restricted to "something close to 130kph so you don't have the immediate temptation or incentive" to see how fast the car goes.
"That will be the first step, and obviously if there's further action to be taken, that can be determined in discussion at the Australian Transport Council.
"But I think it's a good first step. I think it's an important step."
The new speedo limits would require a change to the Australian Design Rules for motor vehicles - the rules manufacturers must meet to have their cars registered for use on Australian roads.
"This is one anomaly really that's there - if you can't go at 240km/h, why have you got 240 on the speedo," Mr Bracks said.
"That's the issue, really. Why have that incentive? Why have that inducement if you like, and why have that as part of a broader advertising campaign that you can market these as cars that can go at these extraordinary speeds."

May as well remove 4th and 5th gear in new cars too.
Bracks is so out on his arse next election.

well spoken Al, i saw a news piece on this.
Bracks is a moron. :x
One of the quotes was about "not everyone" wants to put it through it's paces, but a minority out there do. That's why we want to limit to speedo's to 130. ( dont take that as word for word )
I think that's moronic. Then wont these people see how fast they can get their cars past the 130 or so on the dash???? or just fit an after market dash cluster, like they do in japan for the gtr's etc ( 300 kmh speedo).
Leave things the way they are.
The sensible people out there take their cars to race tracks or a illegal off-street meets.

Why you guy's in Victoria voted for that imbecile is beyond me :o
Do you know Congress in the US recently voted and made the Federal highway limit 85MPH (136 KPH). No more 55MPH bullshit from all those years ago.
The funny thing is I remember hiring a car in Detroit in 1988, a Ford Thunderbird. It had a digital speedo and there was a button to select MPH or KPH. Guess what it would only read to 85 MPH but when you switched to KPH it kept on going no problem, what a bloody joke!
But it satisfied the rules it would only read to 85MPH!
What is wrong with that guy does he catch trams everywhere and not go out of the Melbourne CBD.
But be careful these bloody "do gooders" they can get stuff changed.
Over the last couple of years I have had the pleasure to travel around in the UK (4 trips) and Germany (1 trip). What a bloody pleasure to travel along and not have to worry about loosing your licence. The whole highway speed limit thing in Australia is a COMPLETE JOKE.
On the M1 in the UK everybody is sitting on about 80-90 MPH (130-150KPH) no problem. People get OUT of the fast lane if they are no going over 120 KPH. In Germany (I stayed in Stuttgart) on the autobarn it was whatever you were comfortable with. Most people did around 130-150KPH and got OUT of the fast lane if something was going faster and lots were. We were doing 178KPH down hill in a 1.6 Astra wagon and my mate pulled into the middle lane from the fast lane and said "watch this" looking in the rear vision mirror as he said it. I turned to see 3 Porsche's and 2 Audi's in convey go past us in the fast lane at 200+.
All this speed bullshit was a complete non issue over there. As Christy Marchal (the champion skier) said in a NRMA magazine article when asked "what did you notice about coming back to Australia from training in Europe". She said "the speed limits are so low (110 KPH) compared to Europe I downhill ski faster than that"!

This idea came from the same "Bracksy's Basket Of Shit Ideas" that the P-plater curfew came from. And why all the shit storm all of a sudden anyway? Ford already have a 290kw XR8 on the market which is 20kw over the Typhoon. And what about all those bad ass CL65 V12 Kompressor Merc's (for example) cruisin around here? Im sure they would quite comfortably handle the German Autobahn speed limit of 230km/h.
Just to clarrify, is the proposal to actually limit the ECU to 130km/h or is it just to not display over 130km on the speedo?
Either way its a bad idea. Limitter: Goodbye new car sales market, hello used car sales market, Australian car industries will loose alot of potential buyers.
Display: This is not going to spot people from speeding, Bracksy obviously thinks people are testing the limits of their cars and clocking the big 200 on a daily basis and this being the sole reason people speed.
Once again, Bracks has made up his own reason to justify his own law.

It wouldnt supprise me, Bracks and his bum chum Peter Bachellor (Minister for Transport) propose to minimise car travel (almost eliminate) and make everyone either ride a bike, walk or catch a train/tram to any destination. What is wrong with that guy does he catch trams everywhere and not go out of the Melbourne CBD.
I liek to flutter.
I say beat him with a large stick and then kick him while he's down....
right in the gob...that'll shut'im up.
But seriously... lets hurt him lol :D
Disclaimer:
(This is not an intentional threat towards Mr Bracks, but it is a threat against 'him' a chinese takeaway restaurant owner who i got prawns from last night, still feelin it, caaawww!!) :P
Cheers

does this mean cops wouldnt be able to bust you for doing any more then 130??
"Do you know how fast you were going?"
"yup, 130"
"hmmm, u were going 180, is ur speedo wrong?"
"nope, brand new car, I was going 130"
or something to that effect, we as members of the public cant assume we know how fast were going if there is no speedo, we are not trained in these things.. :P

Good point Tom. Ignorance is bliss, "I was speeding but I know you have to knock 3 km/hr off when you write the ticket, so I just get the fine for 127!!!!!" rofltmz_99 wrote:does this mean cops wouldnt be able to bust you for doing any more then 130??

Bracks has a driver......
this guy runs the state?????, he's a dickhead... :roll:nashstyle wrote:Damn, that was fast :?
I think the technical explanation is that when the needle hits the 130 mark it'll stop the speedo cable from turning which in turn will slow down the transmission and provided you have a clutch that doesn't slip, it should slow down the engine...
I reckon tmz_99 is dead right , but instead of making the limit 130 they should make it 110kh, so that you may never get a speeding ticket ever again.... stupid politicians..
