New to the site, just wanted to say hey
Just wanted to introduce myself, and give everyone a little background. My name's Andrew, I'm in the US, and have an '89 TSi with 55K on the clock. The car is easily one of the 10 nicest cars in the US, and won the Best Paint award at the last meet (49 Starquests).
Mods are standard; Super 16G (ported and polished), 1G MAS + K&N, 3000 GT RR's, Greddy Profec B Spec II, and full catless custom mandrel bent 3" exhaust with an Apexi N1 Turbo muffler. It puts down 233 HP and 313 lb ft of torque, and looks like the day it was bought (it should, I've got $13K in it). I've owned 4 Starquests, this latest one being the last, here's a pic...
Anyway, I also wrote a book on the Starquest back in the early 90's (more like a pamphlet), and have a huge collection of brochures and Mitsubishi Internal Documents sent to me by the Chrysler Historical Foundation and MMC. My nic name in most circles is Encyclopedia Starquestica, so if you have any questions about paint codes, performance numbers, specs, or crap like that, I'm your man (US spec of course).
Just sayin' hey.

Andrew,
welcome to the list. How much did Chysler USA have to do with the creation of the widebody? Is there anything specific in the documents you have.
Also two items of interest.
1) Why go to all the trouble (cost) of upgrading the axles and diff for the 1989 model for just 1 year of production????
2) The widebody rubber hose from the aircleaner has a rubber spacer to fit on the turbo inlet. Perhaps indicating a bigger turbo may have been intended at one time?? Any info on this???
cheers,
Mark.

The "blister" flares were designed by Ralliart Japan, but in a Chrysler design studio in California in late '81, no other information is available.
1. I know the Starion was produced until '90 for a few countries, but the US market only saw the car to '89 (and just 500 of those). Still, it seems weird to upgrade certain things, maybe they'd been in the works much earlier like the intercooler, who knows?
2. That spacer started in '86 for the US models, and we were only slated to get the TC05 and TD05 12A's, never the 14 series.

That's very interesting, 500? That's the number required for FIA GroupA Touring Cars homologation of an evolution model. 5000 were required for the base vehicle sales to be eligiable for "touring car" homologation and then 500 for any "evolution" upgraded model.UltimateLurker wrote:The "blister" flares were designed by Ralliart Japan, but in a Chrysler design studio in California in late '81, no other information is available.

This does not mean anything to our US friends as there was no GroupA stuff happening there however maybe that's what they were up to.
as both starion and conquest were sold in the states, can u confirm if the quest came out standard with the front grill painted the same as the body? whereas starions have it black. also any other differences besides the tail lights?

Toysrus: The negative camber is actually fine, the pic just makes it look off, and the tires are Yokohama A032R ADVAN series autocross tires, 50AA to be exact, they're how I get my 1.7 60 ft. times :).
Decoy: You are correct, Starions came with only black grille's, 'Quests were body color. Starions also said "TURBO" really big in the hatch glass up near the top, 'Quests didn't. There are a few color differences like T87 Fiji Blue, R88 Durban Maroon, B71 Atlantic Blue, and Y59 San Marino Yellow, which were 'Quest-only colors. The 'Quest also came with lighted vanity mirrors, but the Starion didn't. And of course you know the badging was different.
