Hi guys,

When the Starion made its debut in l982 (in 1981 in Europe), Mitsubishi officially announced the name "Starion" is taken from "Star" plus "Arion" which is the name of Heracles' favorite horse.

Tak has it right, the link you posted is pure bull. There is actually much history to the name "Starion" and no one actually knows exactly from where the name comes.

Tak's version is much accepted, in fact, if you look at the early brochures you'll see a horse head atop the brochure (tho' it has NOTHING to do with the word "Stallion").

However, the other version is that the word "Starion" comes from the 2 words "Star" and "Orion". Orion's belt is made up of 3 stars, often times referred to as "Diamonds", and the name "Mitsubishi" itself literally means "3 Diamonds". The early brochures also show star clusters on them as well.

It gets deeper, but suffice it to say that the word "Starion" has nothing to do with the word "Stallion".

Want a better one? The Japanese language doesn't contain the letters "R", "L", or "TH", so why do they name their cars things like "Acura Integra"? Ask them to pronounce an "R" sound and you get a "D" sound, then ask them to say "Love", and you'll get "Ruv".

When they have the names Galant, Lancer and Colt in the lineup as well you've got to wonder what kind of logic someone would use to get stallion from starion.

That always annoyed me when i had my starion and some smartass would say something about that Stallion name rubbish. grr.

Are you on crack? Those things are a dime a dozen here in NZ, they're heavy, slow, break down alot and are impossible to work on. They're massive cruisers, definatly not a sports car. Awesome in conception (thats a funny turn of phrase actually), but just way to heavy and massive in reality.

A big car, granted! But it pulls over 280BHP stock! 3.0L, V6, Twin Turbo, 4WD, 4WS!? Are you talking about the early models that had no turbo, and are also really cheap to buy!? Unless all you NZ folk earn $100K a year, they're slightly out of your price range! You can pick-up stock Twins from 96-99 for about AU$35,000 then they go all the way to AU$120,000! I know for a fact that the U.S have some on the road with well over 1000BHP! MONSTER!

But you can't mildly modify them due to restrictive pipework, tiny turbos, no space and the like. Granted you could probably get megahorsepower but you can't use anything from the factory.

i just thought i would add i love the look of the 3000gt one of the guys that i cruse with in exclucive has a bright yellow one and that thig is sex on wheels and the CU*T is only about 21 years old i hat my life.....

The Car was named the Stallion during a Mitsubishi board meeting, with a Japanese accent, and the name was incorrectly written down by the secretary at the meeting.

After than, Japanese honour didn't allow them to admit the mistake.

Confirmed by Barry Lloyd, One of the founders of Ralliart.

He personally knew those present at the meeting.

He still works on Mitsubishi's (although he is well and truly retired now) and can be found, most of the time, down at Crockenburg's in Welshpool, WA. (Ralliart, WA).

He also has a book on sale "You can't get there from here".

He is happy to relate the story to anyone who asks... Probably more so if you buy his book. :)

I used to think it was all just a co-incidence until he told me otherwise, and given that he was in a position to know, and doesn't really subscribe to Japanese concepts of honour (because he's not Japanese) he thought it was all pretty funny :)

So given the source, I'm happy to accept that this is in fact the truth.
