Hi guys, Just got motor rebuild. Anyways it ides a litlle funny with the revs going +/- 100rpm from 1k. Also when I take off....5 times out of 10 the car has a little puff of smoke.
Also, under boost when I've revved the car out, it also puffs a little smoke.
Any ideas as to what that is?
Please tell me it's my engine (warrantee) and not my turbo.

Hey Dave,
Could be anything. Did you have anything extra done at all when you redid the engine? Porting/polishing? If it's changed at all, then the fuel/air requirements would have changed too. Is it ECI? Ultimately, we all need an aftermarket computer and a fuel injection system in order for our Starions to function well. Sensors and computers and stuff just get shit after 20 odd years and it could be anything in there causing you to blow smoke and idle roughly. If it's greyish/white smoke that means it's oil in there that's burning, which means oil's getting in somewhere it's not meant to, like rings are gone or something. If it's black smoke, that's a sign on unburnt petrol, and a good sign that your computer/ECI setup etc has shat itself. Idle may depend whether you have the aircon on as well. It could be for example, that at a low temperature the fuel can't atomise properly in the ECI/carby/inlet manifold and so it goes in in chunks instead and car idles rough till it's warm enough to work properly.

I ran mine in for 1000km and you can kinda feel when it settles down. Now it runs like a beast. No wuckin forries at all. A bit of boost is okay. There are different schools of thought about the whole thing actually.
It's definitely the case that when it's rebuilt everything's new and things might not be sitting together perfectly. Some people argue that easy driving with the occasional bout of full boost is what it needs to wear it in. If you run it in gently and then try to floor it all the time when the engine hasn't been worn into that shape it might not perform as well as if you had allowed for that with the running in. Having said that, if you floor it everywhere during the run in period, then it probably won't idle very well without having a gap or two for oil or petrol to get through, thus the smoke. Nothing like a bit of boost to clean it all out every now and then though. My mechanic (David at RPW) suggested that a long drive at say 90kmh for a few mins, then 100kmh for a few mins, then 110kmh for a few mins, and so on with a bit of a load, like going on holidays to Margaret River with my ex girlfriend in my case, was really good for running it in.
Funny thing was, after explaining how to run it in, he had no problem in taking it to full boost for me for a few kms when I went to pick it up the day he finished it.
