Most P platers I see (down here anyway) are better, more conscious, more aware drivers than many of the older fully licensed drivers.
That's what happens when you live in the police state :)

Some of the worst driving i've ever seen has been in Victoria (and that's saying something considering i'm from Brisbane). I don't think there's ever going to be a real solution, however, I think if police started focussing on people breaking road rules rather than speeding you would see a dramatic decrease in crash rate. The best way to do this is to instill some sense at the beginning. If a curfew/passenger limit reduces the dickhead factor, there may be a flow on effect that reduces the apparent coolness of lapping and hanging out in macca's carparks (after which some tools trying to race each other down the freeway).

Pepole who drive the nice cars... the r33 gtr's, the jza80 supra's, gt4 celicas, bmw's, mercedes etc (evo's and starions included!) don't do anything dumb .... On the street. We reserve that for laps of calder or drags on friday night @ calder.
You're joking aren't you? You must be. Just because you have money to spend/borrow on a car doesn't make you any more responsible. I guarantee if you drove along say Dandenong Road (or some major arterial to any capital city) on a Friday night, you will see many "responsible" P-platers in expensive cars, doing completely ridiculous things.
Entaran wrote: People need to get some serious experience in Sydney/Melbourne Peak hour(s) traffic and frankly if I had my way everyone would do advanced driving courses/basic rally courses BEFORE they got their P's. A) It'll get it outta their system, B) It teaches responsibility, C) Gives them car control. Any idiot can leave their foot flat to the floor, it's controlling power oversteer around a sharp bend that leaves most people lacking.
Ask your insurance company if your premium goes down if you have done a rally/advanced driving course and your on P plates. Insurance companies official line is if p-platers are more confident they will get in to more accidents. That's a joke.

Again, you are kidding, right? Perhaps in your general circle of friends you think this, but there's a larger world out there.

**Possibly racist remarks follow**
Anybody seen an Indian lady in a Nissan Pulsar with P-plates, veer across two lanes of traffic without indicating then sit at 10 km below the posted speed limit during peak hour traffic? No....... look harder. How is their license obtained? By post going by the way they drive. The licensing system is a joke. I dread to think what would happen if they had to stop on a dreary day. Even at 10 below the limit.
How about the overweight woman who has to shuffle steer because she can't reach past herself? I dare her to avoid a car that's just poked it's rear out of a suburban driveway as she's driving past.

How about a license system where people actually have to "drive" to pass the test. Obstacle avoidance, peripheral vision test, etc. A bit of real world education would do wonders. What people chose to do with this knowledge is up to them. There will always be dickheads who will kill themselves, it's the uneducated ones that are the problem.

[end rant]

Yes I've seen that stuff in melb, but thsoe are few and far between incidents. Usually people with expensive cars that cost $$$ to fix and attract a lot of attention are very... cruisy. They don't have to do stupid shit for attention simply because they get it anyway.

Dispute that you see more 200sx's doing attempted burnouts than commodores/falcons.

Also, my insurance premiums ARE LOWER because i've done all these courses. I just got a quote for a starion for full comp (i'm 19) and it's 577 dollars/yr.

Agreed, ties in with what I said....
it'd be better figured out by having NATIONAL driving standards
and
People need to get some serious experience in Sydney/Melbourne Peak hour(s) traffic

not only that but i reckon people should take the basic motorcycle course as well. they teach you a lot as a car driver as well... would be safer as i nearly got hit again yesterday  i think the high beams will permanently be on now

I don't dispute that, that's just maths. A million commodores/Falcons exist versus a few thousand 200SX's. It's not my point. I believe burnouts aren't particularly dangerous compared to the lane hopping, dragging etc that happens. Educate somebody as to what happens to you and your car control when you clip another car at 100km/hr and see if that changes somebody's driving style.

My boss has just bought a WRX for his 16 yr old son. He asked the question will driving courses lower his (sons) premiums. They said no. Advanced driver training is not recommended as kids who are trained are over confident and more likely to drive faster and take more risks in given circumstances than somebody without training. Perhaps this was the opinion of the sales person, I don't know. I'm sure the boss would like to know what insurance company has your policy, so he can save a few $$$ (like he needs to  ) and educate his son. I'd also like to know where I can insure my Staz for $577 :)

IF and ONLY IF his son is an employee of his business he can insure the car THROUGH the business and list his son as one of the "allowed" drivers. This lowers the premium effectively to Rating two or in some cases rating one. Also, try CGU and Royal Sun Alliance.

Also, no offense but your boss is a moron. Buying a WRX as a first car is ASKING to give him a shit insurance record. EVERYONE KILLS THEIR FIRST CAR.

Parents like that are irresponsible.

None taken. I thought the same thing. But he had some reasonable arguments. The car has lots of airbags, ABS and so forth so it should be a safer and more competent car to drive. Would you rather that or a 78 Datsun Stanza with crap brakes and no handling?
Also does a fair amount of country driving, so overtaking etc is easier. But all that said, buy the kid a liberty or a Rav so he can't overpower himself. It all comes back to taking responsibility for your actions and education. Any idiot can hold their foot to the floor......

SAFETY?

He's trying to give this kid an option to pickup chicks based on his ride.

The car is IRRELEVANT. For 15 grand he could have picked up an E class MERCEDES from 91. I would contend (having studied these things) that NO OTHER -CAR- ON THE ROAD will survive an accident better than one of those.

Also, turbo's are stupid for kids that young. My first car didnt' have a turbo, I'd never driven a turbo car till a starion and frankly, my 104 KW Galant GSR (N/a) could overtake just fine, had ABS and airbags everwhere.

Your boss is still a moron :)

Hey Guys,

I would much rather have my son in control of a wrx than some shitbox.
I would also take the son to a place where he can race around and have fun in controlled conditions. I am not saying this would work for everyone as there will always be people who do stupid things as Alpos said.

The Confession:
Since owning a fast car and getting back into track days etc. I can appreciate the need for speed but also appreciate the need for restraint on public roads.

The Bitch:
Ok now this might seem off topic and may hurt some peoples feelings but its what I think. Why is it that on TV we see commercials from motorbike riders saying "don't write us off" etc. when the fact is that most write themselves off. Every day when driving I always see people on bikes weaving through traffic and speeding majorly on the roads. When stopped at traffic lights i see bikes riding up between the lanes of traffic and up the roadside to get out infront. The fact that a person changing lanes will most likely not see a speeding bike as they look over there shoulder 'see nothing' and proceed to change lanes in that time a speeding bike will appear and think the person has cut them off etc.

The Sad Story:
A while ago my wife used to drive, until one night they we travelling through an intersection and got T-boned by another vehicle, that vehicle was driven by a P plater under the influence of alcohol. subsiquent of that night my wife lost a good friend, the P plater never woke up, and my wife is now terrified of driving herself. What good honestly comes from stupidity.

If this post seems out of place delete it. I am not trying to piss anyone off I just get shitty about these things.

On a lighter not i have a mate who is on his P's and he always sticks to the speed limit and always drives responsibly etc. I think he is one in a million.

Anyways, Thats Life, Good Night :x

I say ban all P platers after dark. More room on the roads for me to go speed crazy. I mean crowded roads are the number one limiting factor to me having a good time driving fast. :beer

This is my unbiased, logical and unselfish belief.
:D
Never argue with an idiot, it brings you down to their level and they beat you with experience.
