im still changing my mind when it comes to oil for my car.. im now thinking about Penzoil..

What weight of Penzoil or number do you guys recommend for my starion?

As far as I know 10w-40 is the standard oil to put in a staz..

atleast I've been using it in my staz :)

should i be using standard oil weights in my 230K+ kms in my old engine? as far as i know its not using up too much oil too quickly.. but it can be a little smokey at idle..

after checking the Pennzoil site, they have the following products:

Conventional Multi-Viscosity Motor Oils
High Mileage Vehicle
Synthetic Motor Oils
Heavy Duty Motor Oils
Racing Motor Oils

which type should i get

Just a Conventional oil man, unless you have some pretty extreme mods. As my engine is pretty old, i use Castrol GTX 15w-40, slightly thicker to take up clearances.

I've changed oils a few times, mainly due to a "why are you using that crap, you should use <insert oil type here>" from people I thought knowledgeable at the time.

This happened with Castrol GTX, Shell Helix Plus and something else which I can't remember. I've now been using Penrite HPR30 for some time, without any narky comments :)

I use the high quality mineral racing oil by pennzoil rated at 25-50W in my lancer turbo.

The top prostock cars here run this oil in their race engines which says something (think $50,000+ engines) and if you give your car a bit of stick from time to time its nice to know that you have a good quiality oil doing the work.

I just checked my works listing and it recomends 20w/50.

So i would sugest a SAE 20w/50 with the highest API rating available i.e. SL/CF

SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) is the vicosity rating (thickness) the lower number is flow rate when cold and the higher when hot.

The API (American Petroleum Institute) rating represents the oils performance qualities. They are updated every 2 - 3 years. As the engine manufactures develop new engines requiring higher performing lubricants, the oil companys develop their lubricants to meet these requirments, hence the API specification is updated.

Dont get caught up in Brand names, just look for the viscosity your after then look for the one with the highest API specification of any of the reputable oil companys. At the moment the highest API spec you will find for petrol engines is SL/CF. SH/CF will also be OK.

Castrol GTX, its $9.95 per 4 litres :P

i use mineral in my engine because its so old and i used magnatec but its too thin and its noticeable.

I will always use castrol GTX in old cars, best oil since sliced bread for these engines.

only go synthetic on new engines.

Synthetics are fine. But if your engine isnt stressed leave the oil in longer to get the value. I drain mine every 12500km's in my WRX.

Remember if your engine is old it may be a bit sludged up. A high spec oil will clean it out, be it Synthetic or Mineral.

Ive heard a rumour, swapping to synthetic oil from mineral will be fine, but swapping the other way is a big no-no? Can anyone confirm this for me?

I tend to go for a cheaper decent oil like Castrol GTX2, but change it more often rather than go to exotic synthetics and snake oil. 20W-50 is my choice for the Starion for a Sydney climate - the weight of the oil is somewhat dependent on the climate you intend to use the car in. The colder the climate, the lower the numbers usually. But each to their own when it comes to oils.
