Driveshaft Sound

Post by popup »

I am starting to look at why there is a clunk when pulling away hard (I will be checking diff mounts!) but the driveshaft sounds quite noisy. I haven't owned a RWD before so perhaps it is normal and I'm worrying too much?

Thanks, Do you think it sounds abnormal? I was able to do this without jacking it up so I don't know if someone can test theirs? I had the handbrake on and in neutral, wasn't trying to turn the transmission or diff, just listening to the slack.

I'm sure there is a measurement that people talk about, for free play/slack but not sure how to do the measurement.

I've just tried that again, but this time in stuck it in first gear and its no where near as noisy and barely moves. So does that mean the slack is from the driveshaft to the diff?

There should be a little play in the driveshaft, yours doesn't look too abnormal. If the pieces were a tight fit there would be no give when parts warmed up and expanded slightly.

Road test articles on these cars complained of the clunk when they were new, just check nothing has an excessive amount of slop, if it's all good it's probably the normal noise they sometimes make..
