Oil pumps?

Post by T-man »

Hi all, it's been a while. I had some spare time today and had a look at my very very very slow project. The project is to twin cam my starion using a evo 3 engine. So far am using the starion block, evo 3 head, evo 3 inlet manifold with ends switched round, and the evo 3 oil pump. However there's a lot of giggery pokery to do like drilling and taping holes and the evo 3 sump doesn't like up. My question is why can't we use the starion pump then I can use the starion sump then there's no reason to drill and tap holes?
Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
T-man.

The STD Staz pump housing doesn't have the BOSSES to accept the hydraulic tensioner & the timing mark is in the wrong place, the easiest is to use a timing cover off a N/A TC out of a galant 6bolt engine. I have a few if you can't find any over there. :beer

Starion vr4 do you mean the timing cover as in the plastic part or the oil pump cover as the oil pump it self is in behind it and is located using bolts? As for the boss for the hydraulic tensioner I was going to make spacers to cover that issue.

Are the pumps off the non-turbo motors the same as the turbo ones, in regards to flow? I had a feeling the turbo pumps had wider gears, but can't confirm.

No they are the same, different years had different sizes but none were small than the Staz units. All TC pumps are bigger than Staz units.

T-Man... No I mean the alloy timing cover plate that bolts to the block face with oil passages in it. as for the bracket situation... why bother when you can get a timing cover/pump assemble that will bolt straight on? When I said the timing marks I ment the belt timing indicator .

That's really good to know. I was going to try and track down a Galant VR4 4g63t oil pump, but I'll just use the one from the 1800 4g67 motor I have then :).

Cheers Starion-VR4.

I'm not 100% sure on the 4G67 engine as I haven't played with them, but I do know the 4G63 pumps are bigger than Staz units. :beer

Is'nt the 4g67 the same block as the 63, just different bore?
If my memory serves me correct the deckheight and crank is the same.

That was my understanding also. I'll measure the pump gears when I've got it apart.
