Diff Ratio Options
Hi All, Before I go plowing through websites and all things Mitsubishi related I thought someone here may be able to answer a question and help me out.
What other ratio's are available here in Australia to suit the Starion big diff centre.
I already have a 4.6 & a 4.2 but would like to know if a 3.9 or 3.7 is available out of another model.
Any help appreciated
Brian

Dirt is for racing on, Bitumen is for getting there.
I've been contemplating the same question Brian.
I'm running a 4.6 in my small lsd, which is awesome in the tight stuff but runs out of puff real quick.
So, I'm thinking 4.2 or 3.9 in my big lsd as an alternative.
My 2011 Triton has a 4.1 ratio but I can't find anybody to confirm what size the gears are in it; tried everyone except head office & wreckers said "you can come a buy a complete diff to check it out"!
I think earlier model Tritons had the 3.9 (or 3.8) but again wreckers want me to buy the whole thing just to confirm sizes.
I have some notes, for possible 3.9 sources, that mention L200 VINs that look like "M?3-M-27" or "M?7-M27" or "M?7-S-27"; eg. "MB3-M-27...."
I'm sure I've got some more notes hanging around, I'll try and find them.

3.9's for the big diff are rumoured to be obtainable from a certain model L200 utility but i've never been able to find/confirm it

Ok, Thanks for the info David and Jeff, I will use my sources and start looking ay the L200 option.
If memory serves me well I think the front diff from an early 4wd Triton is a 4.2 ratio and suits the big diff centre, so that may help you out Jeff. Also the clutch packs to suit the big centre are the same as Nissan R180 / Mazda RX7.
Must catch up for that beer soon Jeff.
Brian.

Found this in an old email to myself, but I can't recall where it came from other than it, obviously, coming from some USA source.
The 89 Mitsubishi Mighty Max & Montero share the same carrier in the rear as the Starquest and have 2 gear set options witch will both fit in the Starquest. They are the 3.90:1 and 4.22:1
here in the states the diffs were the same except the 88-89 had 6bolt axle shafts. there were lsd and non lsd diffs tough and different variations of torque tubes.
As for gears over here we use gears from the trucks. Mighty max/dodge d50, montero/raider(not sure of the nomenclature over there). You can still get the gears new and there was a company that was selling them(fuel injection specialties), but i dont know if they are still around. I believe the 3.9 fits the stock housing and the 4.11 required some clearance but if you are running 4.8 id say you have the clearance. The only difference is the back lash spacing id different on the truck diff so if you buy a kit for a truck you will need additional back spacing.

Jeff,
Great info. Trawled thru the wreckers last week looking Mitsu stuff and came up with 4.2, 4.6 & 4.8 listing for the transaxles on both Pajero and Triton, but it was hard to tell which size would suit what Starion housing with out removing a heap of diff centers. Was thinking of trying to match them up thru bearing sizes. Don't suppose anyone has a bearing catalog listing for Mitsu pinions and carriers do they?
If a Montero as a Pajero then is a Mighty Max a Triton??
Brian.
