So I got a quote to paint my starion today!
In Sydney, shop around. I had a couple of quotes around the $3k and that included fitting a body kit. Remember you get what you pay for. And as a dedicated rally car I wouldn't be going over the top.
What colour you doing it?
Why do you want to sandblast it? Just get it sanded, lay down a primer/ isolator and finish it in a solid 2 pack.
Are you tempted to do it yourself? You can save some cash but its going to eat up a lot of your time...

My rally JB will cost way less than $1000. Doing all the sanding myself, rust removal myself, bogging up little scratches & dents myself, removing all glass & bumpers myself, then giving it to a guy to blow the 2 pack on in a paint oven, then reassembling everything myself. Because its a rally car, it doesn't have to be a street machine, as it will probably look a lot worse than it is now in 12 months time.

DIY ftw. Worked in a panel/paint shop, picked up the tricks of the trade and bailed. It really isn't that hard to pick up.. well least for gloss's and what not.. getting into the pearls and what not is a little trickier :P. Nonetheless.. i'd prefer to spray/prep my own car knowing i spent alot less.. and the amount of time i spend on it.. will give the end result on how good it turns out. Some paint shops can just get lazy as they don't know you and just want quick cash. Just keep that in mind.. as at the end of the day.. diy for a rallycar is your best bet.

Also, the starion is a bit more involved then the LB lancer I painted years ago (when single)
I've gone for base red. as the color! Not trying to match anything, just bright red. And yes it's 2K paint, so it really should be done in a booth.
I would of thought that Rally car = quick job for cheap price....... Not that I have found as yet.

7 grand is nothing. The amount of hours put into a good quality job is endless. I have been panelbeating for 10 years now and my father for over 40, we have both worked on restoration projects but gone back to insurance accident repairs as people are not prepared to pay for the time put in . People are prepared to spend 10 grand under the bonnet but turn there nose up at 3-4 k for the actual appearance of the car. You get what you pay for and starting with the best possible shell/ foundation will save you alot of money in the end .

I know its a lot of work, and thats fine. But if you put 2 guys on it @$80 p/h each for a full day thats $1280 Plus say $300 in materials = $1580
That should see the prep work done!?
The paint cost me $380
Rub/ block back the Hi fill primer 2 guys for half a day? So $640?
Mask up and spray the color. Solid Red, no clear or anything. 1 guy 1 day = $640
Give me the car back and I have the fun of putting all the glass, trim, bars, lights etc back on = Free
So $1280+
$300+
$380+
$640+
$640
=$3240. And that's $340 more then the very first price I got :o
So $7k is a bit if a joke given the car is not rusty and is not a show/ street car..
And yes it would of been cheaper to use a car that had good paint and panel to start with, but I got this car as a going car. So I built it! My Spare shell wouldnt need a paint job, But that would mean I've destroyed this one Sadly it wouldnt be the first Rally car Ive destroyed :x
And being a rally car means you will NEVER get the money back. It owes me way more then a widie already :roll:
