Galant 8v roller rocker heads.

Post by STARZILA »

Can I use one of these on my Starion?
Do they have the same chambers?
I think theyre called HH Galants in OZ. (88-92 4G63 sohc 8V)
Surely being roller rocker, they would be a better head..
Im thinking of building a forged sohc for my widey, as ive got all the bits ready to go and keeping the original motor aside.
I'd like it to look factory under the bonnet you see.. :)

They also have hydraulic lash adjusters don't they? Handy when they work properly, a pain in the ass when they dont... Which is pretty frequently from all accounts.

Still, pop in a new set, or clean the old ones really good while you have it all apart and might be worth a shot?

I noticed zero difference going from a flat follower head to a roller rocker head, so long as you run a decent oil with moderate zinc content you will be fine on a flat follower head. The Galant 8V heads tend to crack anyway.

Due to???
Less material in the (crappier) moulding?
Higher cylinder pressure?
Both?

Starion heads, non-JV and especially JV versions are also pretty prone to cracking. I don't think the Galant heads are any more or less likely to do it.

I would say just shitty material used, and probably crappy design. They always crack between one of the valves and the spark plug thread, or from valve to valve. There was a batch of the NZDM Galants which were especially bad.
