RX7 gearbox install info

Post by OLD FART »

Thought this would help those thinking about upgrading to the 7 box

1 when the 7 box is bolted up to the correct bell the front of the imput shaft is only a couple of mm different compared to the stock box when measured from the front of the bell.
2 the spline and spiggot bearings are the same as the stock starion parts.
3 the extension houseing that has 4 bolts has to be shortened so that the rearmost bolts screw into the front holes so the shifter comes thru the existing opening in the tunnel.
4 the 7 box is a tight fit in places BUT no big hammer work needed & it does not rattle.
5 the 7 box will be at an app 15 degree angle to the left so the stick will need to be bent back to vertical in a RHD car.
6 no mods required to speedo cable and reversing light wires ,they slot straight in.
7 you will need to make a rear box X member as well as a dust cover for the lower 1/2 of the bell.
8 the drive shaft will need to be shortened by app 90 mm ans a new yoke fitted to the front. this cost me app $325.00 & it included a new rear uni joint as well.
9 You will need to jack the car up on the passenger side as high as possible to get the box near vertical to be able to fill the box with the right amount of oil then undo both filler plugs and fill thru the top hole till oil flows out the lower hole. Make sure you also use an axle stand under the sill for safety!!!
10 Highly recommend REDLINE LW SHOCKPROOF OIL be used

IMPORTANT NOTE I have a 3.9 diff and have checked speedo with a sat nav on a long straight at a steady 100k indicated and the correct speed was 105 k so if you have a 3.5 the speedo will be even further out

More detail required for a sticky, please include photos if possible. Rad, we all know you now know how to post links now :pimp
Reduce fuel costs by 15-20% & cut emissions by 1/3rd...
Increase engine performance & prolong engine life...
How?

What more detail do you need :?
The outer tube ext houseing that joins the houseing to the box is a cut & shut job and the shaft that is inside has to be shortened the same amount and the roll pin hole in the shaft repositioned by exactly the same amount
Can post links BUT still don't know how to post pics :

Defiantly worth a sticky. Anyone who has photos could add them, but I think its great without it.

Thanks Rad. Great offer and thanks for the Project Zero link. The devil is in the detail as they say...
