DRIFT Starion info thread - Calling all DRIFT Starions
yeah if i cant find a relatively cheaper lsd.. then i will just lock my current diff for the meantime just to test it out on the track etc.. then from there i can improve on the things which are failing or not cutting it.. but yes the differential and the suspension needs to be sorted out asap i believe. Will most likely get my handbrake all sorted out and tightened up so it actually has some use. Then just the intake and exhaust for meantime with the boost adjustment and see how she goes.
D2's the only real easy way to go for adjustable suspension these days?

The first time i ever drifted my JA was at QR back in 2004, and i did it with an open diff! my handbrake worked extremely well at the time, so i was doing handbrake entries at about 80kph, and dumping 2nd gear at redline, it was enough to keep the slide going and link into the next, the only down side was it opened up on long corners and i lost angle.. so yes i'd list the lsd second, suspension is more important..
and i dont see how starion lsd's are expensive, they're much better than a silvia viscous.. they're like a 32 gtr lsd.

from what i've seen for a second hand differential there ranging betwee 800 - 1500 bucks depending on condition.. but its all about whether i can get one or not. but for a small price to lock it simply on the ground of testing to whether its worthy enough is worth a shot i reckon. spin both wheels all day instead of the chance of lifting up a wheel with a lsd which eventually will get worn after the flogging i intend for it lol. but yeah each to their own.

yeah you underestimate the starion lsd, they dont wear out quick at all.. even the little diff..
you should pay between 600 and 1000 for a starion lsd, it'd only be 1500 if u were doing a 5 stud conversion plus 6 bolt big diff conversion..
they drive soooooo much better with an lsd over a locker, they're truly horrible with a locker, they spin too easy.

Woohoo, and including my 6-7 year hiatus from Starion ownership, I'm an official post whore now?
Is swapping the big diff into a narrowbody a particularly difficult task, provided you have access to all the widebody bits? Its the front suspension arms that are longer isnt it, not the rear ones? Means driveshafts should be the same length?
I can almost guarantee you that my small LSD has never been rebuilt, and it still works pretty well... Needs to be shimmed up now I have some sticky tyres on there though.

You need:
6 bolt diff assembly with torque tube, drive shafts, drive flanges & rear stub axles. Rear discs, and calliper brackets
Front 5 stud hubs, discs & caliper brackets
Then it all quite literally bolts in

The starion diff is viscous still isnt it?
the r200 vlsd's are great when there shimmed for about 3 meets, but they losen up and begin to peel single wheels again.
Had ours out on sunday for the drift school at Mallala
Went alright but didnt get the hydro in as we ran out of time. They defiently need as handbrake to get into the slide and to link the corners as the little soch is a little under powered!
A radiator upgrade would also be reccomended!

Yeah i've seen numerous vlsd's wear out alot quicker then usual.. Then again most of them were nissan's... gotta love their reliability. Definitely want to give the locker/ minispool a shot though..
Were you using that clutch much before coming into corners niss720 or just reefing her one way with a touch of the handbrake to get her out and just hold it flat.? Biggest worry for me atm is the fact my staz won't be able to hold the slide for long before bogging down...

At least the you can get a nissan 2way mechanical lsd for $850
And yeah the stoc hand brake doesnt do anything! so have to brake last minute bringing to shift the weight to the front and kick the clutch.
I would defiently suggest a td05 and a intercooler, i was very supprise by the power. plus the screamer pipe and flutter makes it all the more fun!

oh man how i oath for some flutter and screamer pipe... :beer
I think i'll need to invest in some sort of twin plate clutch or something that i'll never need to replace again/long time to take a beating ill be giving to it lol.

starion lsd's are MECHANICAL - CLUTCH TYPE! So they're an identical design to a GTR R32 R33 diff, they dont wear out unless you set them up loose and do constant circles not spinning the wheels in a carpark for about 6 months straight!

just a question that came into my head before.. mitsumadness what tyres were you running in that drift photo you posted earlier? looking into suitable tyres to run on the front and rear.. i'm just going to start of with second hand tyres that i can get from work as their pulled of fairly regularly and pay money to be taken.. so be sure they would be glad if i took them lol.
also after reading redzones list earlier i totally agree with it so obviously im doing my diff and d2 coilovers before my first track day.. as i've tried to go around a corner with speed with it on the stock supension and wow does it feel boaty.. so d2's are definitely a must!
also niss720 your staz's motor is deadbone stock? no boost adjustment to say 12 - 14psi or what not? just wanna see if i need this intake and maybe exhaust for some free flow and noise... before i hit up the event.. should do the intercooler also.. just need piping lol.

Hi!
Yeh I was also just running secondhand tyres on pretty ordinary wheels back then, I think mostly standard wheels. Does ok. Am still using secondhand tyres at the moment but once the new engine is in and done ill be getting better tyres, and depending on power, possibly wider rear wheels.
Unfortunately I have a massive lack of footage of my cars except for one very average video of the old JB back in 2005. From now on I'll be getting proper footage, so will post as soon as I have it (ie once the new engine is in haha).
