Car not starting.. any ideas?

Car not starting.. any ideas?

Gday all

I have had my car running for almost a year now and its always started fine. occasionally a flat battery but thats about it.

The other day I went to start the car (Had it running a few days before) and it just turns over and doesnt kick.

I had moved a couple vaccume lines around in the meantime and ive insalled a strut brace. Nothing I would of thought would prevent it starting.

At first I thought it may be low on fuel because the guage read low, So I went and got 20L and chucked it in. No luck.

Ive checked spark at the end of the leads with the screwdriver and it seems ok. I pulled off the return line for fuel and it comes out when turning over. And Ive checked there is a voltage going to the injectors also.

Any Ideas to what else I can check? There is no alarm system what so ever on the car, Its all original. Its a JB BTW

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! I was really hoping to get it ready for RWC over xmas

if the issue has happened after you've moved a couple of vacuum lines and installed a strut brace, i'd say recheck those vacuum lines and anything you might have accidentally disconnected while putting in the strut brace :)

Sometimes it's also worthwhile getting someone else to check the vacuum lines for you - a fresh pair of eyes will catch something you may have overlooked (and may overlook again the second time because we all like to think we did it right the first time ;) )

Would a wrongly disconnected vac line cause the car not to fire at all? I understand it could cause it to run rough. To be honest I don't know how to put the lines back to how they were lol.

I might need a second set of eyes. I've been looking all over this this the last three nights after work :(

Make sure everything around the ignition coil is properly connected.

I get spark though?

The only thing that isnt connected there is a condensor thing that one end grounds to the chasis. Not sure what terminal the other side goes on the coil. I dont think that was ever connected but

Clean up all your earth cables from the battery terminal to the chassis and to the block. Sand them all back to shiny metal to ensure a good connection. This is the cause of many gremlins in these cars

Yeah, I think you have an earth gemlin or poor contact somewhere....

Try leaving it the sun for a while and see whether it will start then. Or it could be fuel related or starter motor??

Got compression ...Timing belt snapped?.

I've taken the timing cover off to check timing. Belt is still ok (belt has probably only done 5 kms since replacement.

I don't know about starter motor, mine sounds noisy and lasy but it's no slower then what it was before. Sometimes it turns over much quicker then usual but it still don't start.

I'll check those earth cables when I get home, cheers!

What model car is it? Jb check the injector clips & coolant temp connector :)

Thanks. I just checked the clips and coolant temp plug and they seem fine. Still no luck :(

the first thing i would check would be voltages, check to see if you have 12 volts at the injectors, and 5 at the temp sensor, the vacuum lines being off and even the coolant sensor being disconnect will not cause it not to start, after trying to start it, if you pull out the plugs, are they wet with fuel.
if you have no voltage at the injectors, check for voltage at the ballast, it is located near the air filter, it limits the current to the injectors, check the connections there and if there is voltage present, if not, then check all of the fuses, and fusable links, there is 1 under the air filter and some around the battery

Thanks mate! I have 8v going to the injectors. Does that sound right? Also what is the ballast, does it look like a relay? There was exposed wiring going to that relay that is near the air filter that I taped up the other day. Could that be the bit?

the injector ballast resistor is a silver looking box around 10cm long and about 3 cm wide, there is normally a small harness off it into a round connector, there is 1 power feed and then 2 feeds for the 2 injectors, 8 volts is a bit low, it should be 12 volts unloaded, it would be around 8 volts when the injector is on. check for bad connections, broken wires.
