i work for a panel shop out in doncaster, we recently painted up BLKCRX for the Melbourne Auto Salon. ( took out the most powerful FWD 324kw!)
We take pride in our work, and love the finished result. Being the detailer it's my position to get the car looking its best. Buffing it up to the show quality shine that we all love. My car's about to get painted shortly, just waiting on some parts then it will be rubbed back and painted my own custom colour. It really depends on how well you want your car finished, it comes down to the materials used and most of all if they know what they are doing. Have a good look around the workshop and chat to the people who work there, also see if they have photo's of any work that they have done. I know that we keep a record of most of the work that goes through.
The best advice is to look around, and get alot of different quotes, find out what kind of paint they are using as well.

to be honest with you, it's taken me 3 months to get a replacement front guard for my car. That was through work, though i had the benefit of paying trade... hehe..
There are many different types of paint that can be used on your car. The main types that are used are Enamel, 2k( 2 pak) and acrylic ( crazy cryl)
Panel shops will use the Enamel and 2k whereas a back yarder will use the crazy cryl as they dont need a dedicated spray booth to get rid of all the toxins.
The best way to go is the 2k way, you get a better finish and even better once the car is cut and polished. Enamel and Acrylic tend to get the gloss off the gun.
If you decide to use the 2k then get Spies Hekier or PPG, as i have found these ones to bring up the best finish. At work we use standox, it's pretty good, the apprentice just painted his VK in Standox with Standox clear and it looks schmmmiiickoo. really nice paint.
Also the best way to tell if you are going to get a good finish is to see how well the booths are maintained. Dirty paint booth = shitty looking paint job.
If you have any q's just post, i'll do my best to answer and if i can't i will get advice from the painters/beaters at work.
Is your car an insurance job? if it is then you can specify your "recommended" repairer.
hope some of that drivvle helps

The cheapest version of a colour flip paint (Harlequin is a PPG trademark) is around the $750 mark for 4 litres, this is the Standox Exclusive line. With this paint you get your own personal i.d plate for the car, this states your cars orginality.
I enquired about the brand new PPG colour that flips from Heavy Deep Purple to Blood Red, this is sold as a kit for around the $5k mark. :x
I decided against it.
rofl
The colour flip option is good if you can get the paint cheap ( which is near on impossible unless u pick up a sponsorship with a panel beater or paint supplier ( the most likely option)), then you also have to budget enough paint to be left over in the uneventful incident that the cars stacked.
You would hate to find out the colour flip that you love so much has been deleted.
I guess that's the reason i decided to make my own colour using pretty much a factory colour that i liked and then tinting it and adding the metallic and pearls till i got a colour that i liked. though the car is yet to be painted. And i have extra paint if the awful does happen.
Working in a panel shop certainly has its advantages. :D

back to the point a little (i dont mind discussing paint, i quite enjoy it too).. so MelbStazz, if its an insurance job, do you recommend i take it to your work place?

i definately want a late model front bar.. with left light cluster
i got a spare front panel (the one with the mitsubishi star on it) if need be..
the only other things that are damaged should be easy to get.. front quarter panel, and grille complete with light sprayer (poped right out)..

i might want a different things done.. like i get a red JA hood, and have you guys spray it black?

let me know

cheers

generally if its an insurance job you will get what you want done, though it might take abit longer. I'm not sure about all the other stuff that you want to do with the car as that may have to be done separately to the insurance claim. What they can do is put another job on the car which relates to the insurance claim allowing you to get all the other little extra's done, this is usually a cash job as insurance companies don't like paying for OUR own mod work.
Sure we could paint your bonnet black, but wouldn't a nice carbon bonnet look better??? I'm still negotiating $$ for the carbon bonnet out of the states. Freight is the big killer! :x
I guess that you could bring your car down and discuss with the boys on what you want done and what we can do to help you.
Stay in touch...

The recent show job was done for about ( pls dnt quote me ) $10k, but that was a show job. The colour of the car was originally black and we resprayed it 03 WRX STi Black Metallic w/gold pearl, then cleared. Mind you the car was involved in a Big accident and the whole deal may be inclusive of that claim.
It's always going to be cheaper painting your car a similar colour to what it already is that way you can sometimes get away with doing the engine bay, maybe door jams depending on how different the new colour is.
For an example my JA is R47 red, so i looked around and found a nice metallic red and tinted in extra metallic and pearls. I kinda recommend this way as it is cheaper. Though you can always get a panel beater to do some back yard work on your car over a couple of weekends and then get a painter to do the same and before you know it ... schmicko paint job. Getting a decent beater and painter is essential for a great finish. The better the panel beating and the finish the better the painter can bring that finish up. :D You could get the car painted and beated for maybe half of what you would pay at a work shop. It's difficult to say. :?
Depend's on who you know :D :D
This generally does take longer :x
You can always strip the car down as much as you can by taking off door trims, removing lights, front and rear bars. This little bit of time can save huge dollars in labour = $$$ in ur pocket.
The best bet is to shop around and get a rough idea on price and see where you can go from there. Have a good look through the quote and see where you think you can make a saving. Be careful though as some back yard panel beating can cost you more in the paint shop.
