Historic rego
I was hoping to register my starion in a few years on historic plates and use it only on sanctioned club days. It seems that this is not possible, it looks like it can only be registered on historic plates if it is over 30 years old ( three years to go ) and does not comply with ADR's in its original unaltered form. It also cannot be modified. Anybody have any ideas on this subject ? I really dont want to re register it again as is costs so much here in NSW and I have too many rego's as it is. Blue slip will be a pain due to window tinting etc. I am not keen to install the lowered suspension either as it would only have to come out again for blue slip.

If it isnt stock, forget it.
You would be better off, letting the rego lapse & get a "special" blue slip, when you want to re-rego it.
It's the RTA's way of getting older modded cars off the road. Because people were using the historic thing as a loop hole.

Darrell your car would make it through historic rego no prob. (when it's 30) Our club has rally cars 1600 crapsuns and the like on historic plates, yes they are full rally cars with full roll cage race seats harnesses etc. And yes they "technically" should not be on historic plates, however............... They take the risk. But then again the rally cars only come out 4 or 5 times a year.
That is why rally rego is a waste of time! too expensive and only able to be driven at sanctioned events! Also as of a few months ago not allowed (so I have been told)
When my starion is ready it will get an engineers report and have full road rego. Only because I want to be able to drive it when I want, not only on a sanctioned event.
The other catch with historic plates, I'm not sure that austarion would count as a recognized car club!!

One of the guys I used to work with at Burson has a 32 ford coupe that is on full rego. Its a glass body, but on a genuine 32 commercial chassis, so he doesn't need to go through all the street rod bs.
When he renew'd his rego a couple of years ago, the girl at the rta entered the year of the car incorrectly, she put 1981 (year of the motor). When the rta discovered their little f-up, they cancelled his rego, told him he would have to hand in his rego plates and put the car through a full re-engineers inspection. But as the rules has changed since he built the car originally, it wouldn't pass and there was nothing they could do about it.
After much screaming on the phone and politely worded letter from his solicitor, miraculously their f-up was fixed the next day.

Move to Victoria & put it on club reg through joining a complying car club! I've got two done this way, one is caged & is slightly modded (soon to be more modded).
If you don't want to move, get a good friend/relative in Vic to let you put it in their name, get creative with a private rental agreement & get a new license card to replace the NSW one you 'lost'.

I had the rego cancelled on my Celica in 1990, The RTA in Wollongong had cancelled it as the car was written off and the plates handed in, So I asked if the plates are still at that RTA, Yes under lock and key she said. And the car was destroyed? Crushed she said!
So I stood to one side, pointed out the front and asked So what is that? As my car sat in the car park.
I'll get the manager she said.
They would not correct they mistake and told me that I could not drive the car as it was unregistered. No it's not I said, Yes it is. When that was going nowhere he told me that my car can not be registered (fix their mistake) as my car was not road worthy!! :x
So I drove it home and parked it, 3 months it sat in the shed until our solicitor got to the bottom of it, My number plate was OHC *** The other identical 1976 TA22 Celica had plates OHE***
No apology or refund for lost rego, just a letter telling me that the matter had been resolved and I was able to go and register the car again :glare: :glare:

A mate of mine in michigan has an 8 sec, full tube chassis, turbo, bbc powered 69 ss camaro that is legaly rego'd over there. Because all the safety bits are inplace (wipers, head lights etc). Over here, the coppers can take that car off you, if you drive it off your driveway, onto the street just to drive it up onto a trailer.

A few years ago I made the mistake of buying a Westfield Clubman from WA. Nothing wrong with the car but the hassle I had with the RTA was unbelievable. After three months of tooing and froing i was sent to the vehicle identification centre at penrith. It was there I was informed that in spite of a full engineers certificate and the fact that it had been registered quite happily in Wa for some years that there was nothing else they could do. It could not be registered in NSW because it did not have a compliance plate. I told the guy "congratulations mate you have finally won, I'm sticking the thing back on a train and sending it back to WA, well done !" He must have felt sorry for me as he gave me the number of the guy in charge of all NSW rego's in Sydney. I called the guy and he was a great bloke " of course it doesnt have a compliance plate he said, it's a bloody westfield, handbuild" He gave me his number and said to go back to the rta in richmond and if they gave me any grief to call him on this number. Armed with this info I marched into the RTA and get the same frikken curry muncher who had given me all the grief the last four times.
She started to say something and I cut her off and said "don't say another word, just go and get your manager" she was annoyed and went and got him. I gave him the number and demanded that they stop being such stupid pricks and register the damn car. Car was rego'd in five minutes. Bloody morons.
