Help needed.......................Please.................
From talking to my mechanic today (who does a lot of diffs for rally cars) He was saying that the splines are part of the LSD hemisphere itself! So that rules out changing them, that and the donor diff is missing in action :(
So I either get some collars made up and have them shrunk onto the shafts of get rid if the hemisphere and start again!?
The 6 bolt shafts are not really an option at the moment as I don't want to have a bitsa set of shafts for a rally car.
I do remember a post on here when the diff was for sale about making 1 set of shafts from 3 different sets AU starions for the hub end & 87 WB for the diff end & 86 WB for the bit in the middle. What a pain in the arss if you ever need to replace one!!! And that was still a bit of a bodgie fit?? Anyone remember or know were to find it?

That LSD centre that 'Silo' was selling would fix your problem. Complete large 4 bolt LSD centre/hemisphere! Shafts become a problem if changing to 5 stud or going to 6 bolt shafts, so that's not really an issue for you, but 2 sets of shafts only would be needed with 6 bolt shafts in your situation.starionc wrote:From talking to my mechanic today (who does a lot of diffs for rally cars) He was saying that the splines are part of the LSD hemisphere itself! So the other Diff parts are missing? I would suggest really having a good look to find them, especially the original parts the the ex Pentti diff. I'm assuming your diff guy swapped them around in the first place to make it work with your car!
Imports.
88 GSR-VR Widebody 2.6L
87 GSR-V 12V Dash 2.0L

It was the diff guy that has lost the other diff! He moved his workshop and would of chucked a lot of stuff out, sadly the starion diff was most likely one of them :glare:JDSTAZ45 wrote:

I'll know more in a few days when my mechanic measures it all up. Fingers crossed

Nobody in their right mind in the diff game would throw out a unique looking diff that was an LSD. I've heard the story from a previous owner of one of my cars that required the LSD overhauled. Instead of repairing the centre they replaced it with a single spinner & you guessed it, the LSD centre/whole diff assembly disappeared.
Not wanting to accuse your mechanic of that but it does happen...has he compensated you for your loss already? Your losses are being truly realised only now though...

if a standard lsd is worth 1k, how much would one be worth with the legendary pentti name attached?

Now I picked it up from the mechanics (he was not going to get to it in a big enough hurry for me) and took it to my Diff guy, He Measured it and found that the LSD is 2mm bigger then the open diff in the collar/ guide part. So either he will put a 1mm hardened sleeve in it, or maybe change over the spine and collar with the small open diff!
I'll know next week.............. Fingers crossed :D
Fixed! Fitted and done :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Happy as!
Bastard of a job putting the diff back in on your own, but it's done now. Full of LSD oil and ready for the next part of the build. That should be the exhaust, then Dyno :D :D
Sadly it's the $$ that is holding my up now :x
Cheers Jason

My diff guy took it all apart and changed the casing with a LSD casing from a Pajero front diff, I think that was what he used. He told me all about it, but it was gibberish to me LOL.
End result I got to keep my Kaz style LSD and the standard LSD from the Pajero stayed with him as his parts collection.
So I don't know what the go was with a 25 spline and big collar that I had? I was of the impression that the US diffs were either 25 spline or 28 and bigger shaft size?? Not a bit of both?? Mine was from the UK though, so maybe that makes some difference?
Anyway it's one less thing to worry about now!!
I'd like to know if the front diff of a pajero would fit into a starion in it's own housing??? Sounds like an easier way of finding an LSD!?

The rear diff center out of the mid to late 80's Pajero, L300, L200 etc will swap into the Starion housing. There are 2 sizes though, but I don't know which size. I know this cause I was talking to a diff guy that's done it a couple times. The carrier bearing is a different size, but apparently it's an easy swap.

early Pajero front lsd's are rarer than starion lsd's.. very very hard to find..
