the SR20 isn't exactly a light engine though. It's still heavier than a CA18 which is iron block.

there is an ex lancer which has a turbo 1uz in it.......

Yeah i would be keen to see if this has been done and how easy/hard it was.

There is a guy in Timaru that has done the conversion for a sunday race car. Seemed to think it was an easy enough swap.

And to be honest, if my 4G ever crapped out, Id be doing this conversion too. Although with one or two turbos :D

if my 4g has a catastrophic failure Im going kim austin style
87 GSR-V, Factory DASH, Rebuilt bottom end with arp rod bolts and balance shafts removed, head reconed with 3 angle valve grind, TD05 housing machined out to take Garrett T4 internals, rebuilt and cryoed gearbox

the 1uz is a rather large engine - there would be difficulty in fitting in a turbo or two and keeping the car street legal..

Na, keeping it legal would be easy. There is a old EX Lancer up north with a turbo 1UZ thats street legal. Only had a mild brake upgrade too.

Yeah I remember when that came up for sale on trademe... damn that was a nice car! Had quite a few HP to poke from memory, close to 4 or 500hp?

Did you get a look at where they placed the turbo?

I figured there would be legality issues due to clearance woes more than anything, but perhaps the laws in NZ are a bit different?

Yeah the laws here are much more lax then they are in Australia :)

The EX Lancer had the turbo (single) where the battery was. Behind the front left headlight.

Yeah its great living in NZ :)
