Evo 3 + starion engine = ???

Post by T-man »

Hi all, now that I've got my head kinda round what I need to do with my exhaust manifold I've got a new question. While researching on what I needed for the twin cam convertion I decided to go the evo 3 route, I bought a complete car! I'm using the evo 3 16v head, exhaust manifold, inlet manifold, ecu and wiring loom. Im a wee bit confused on, do I use the evo3 pistons or just use the starion bottom end?
Next question, do I remove the oil pump pulley and crankshaft Pulleys and swap them for the evo 3 pullys as there wider? Or once again will the starion pulleys be ok?

Thanks in advance,
T-man

You will need to use the Evo type pistons as the fly cuts in the Staz pistons do not match the 16 valves in the Evo head.
FYI 16V TC is an interference design meaning that if the belt breaks or slips you will end up with bent valves whereas the same result won't happen with the 8V head
You will need to swap the front covers as well. Need to check the alignment of the pulleys on whatever pulleys you use weather they be V or multi rib belts and pulleys.
Hope that helps you.
PS been there done that :)
PPS you may need to massage the firewall or move the motor forward app 15mm ( like mine ) to make room for the CAS.
I've had mine since 03 07 92

All u really need is a non turbo galant gsr dohc motor and use the bits from that..

Whats wrong with the evo3? They are highly prized here.

Ps you won't be able to use the evo bottom end or any internals in your project, as they are a narrowblock which won't fit the starion gearbox, and the rods pistons & crank are unusable in the starion block as they are different sizes (known as 7 bolt type). Use aftermarket forged pistons to suit a dohc 6 bolt type motor in your starion block.

A oldie said, you can use the evo top end & the timing covers etc. have a look at my twin cam thread and pay attention to balance shafts
Fibreglass airdams $370, fibreglass front bumpers $260, reco drag links $165, alloy radiators $925 (unpolished), h/l switch rebuilds $125, all plus freight.

Hi guys thanks for all the quick responses. The evo 3 was a old toy I had for a while, I thrashed it about for a while but the 4x4 drive system wasent as fun as my starion, but the starion lacked in power so I decided to swap the engines after the evo suffered from crank float. I figured that I would only need the top end, but after the responses Ive recived I take it I'm going to have to buy new pistons? This is a budget project as my I just had a new addition to the family. So any ideas on how to keep costs to a minimum would be greatfully recived.

Thanks in advance,
T-man

P.s the evo 3 model here in the uk aren't very prized the starion are more rare and cherished.

Because you UK-guys have a shitload of Evo's...
The Swedish Evo-fanatics buy them from the UK for peanuts compared with the price's in Sweden!
