stupidest thing ive ever done
Well where do i start
I had fuel leaking out of inlet manifold by the throttle body,got o ring from a good chap on here,put that in and made new gasket for bottom part of throttle body plate.put a rag in inlet manifold hole so shit didnt fall in there,went out of shed to stop my kids fighting and sort out the wife :x .came back in chucked on the throttle body,bolted everything up,fired it up.what do you know it started first pop then started missing.turned it off and thought what have i forgot to do? ,the F%&@EN RAG!!!!
Removed plugs and there in number one cylinder is my rag, stuck up into valve,got some out.then removed whole inlet manifold,turned engine over to open inlet port and pulled the F@%$EN RAG out,what i could see of valve looked ok,put spark plug in couple turns,turned over engine couple turns by hand and could hear air pushing past.so made the guess i maybe ok......Went inside to bed
Next day made new gasket for inlet manifold and re assembled everything.well it starts but only for few seconds but sounds ok,no funny sounds but i cant get it to run constant it just dies.sounds to me like fuel and my thoughts are it would sound like it was missing if a valve was bent...any ideas anyone..i feel like the biggest tool right now,ive worked on lots and lots of cars and have never done anything like it

When I had fuel leaking out of my Type A manifold i found it to be injector seals. you may have a vaccume leak through your gasket or a vaccume line you didnt install correctly.Do a compression test to see if the valve may be bent

Kiwi ,I know how you must feel as many years ago while my stock turbo was being rebuilt I had the oil feed to the turbo modified at a hydraulic shop to take a braided feed line and the ONE TIME I failed to do what I always do =blow out everything with compressed air to clean things as well as ensuring that there are no blockages I bolted up the turbo and went for a drive and only a short distance later heard funny noises so took the compressor inlet pipe off the turbo to find heaps of shaft play
Took turbo and oil feed line off to find that the modified feed line adaptors had been blocked with silver solder so zero oil feed to the turbo
The owner of the business showed it to the guy that had done the job and paid to have the turbo repaired without any quibleing :)
I always go therefor anything needed as it is great to find a workshop that is honest and doesn't shirk their responsibility.

Bugger, I feel your pain. Every chance you've bent a valve if the rag was stuck in there, I doubt the cam or rocker would have given way.
I redid belts and so forth one time after replacing power steering hose. Did up the centre bolt on the power steering pump by hand, got called inside by the wife then continued on my merry way after. Following day, the power steering pulley slipped forward, ate all the splines on it and slipped off leaving me with no power steering. Kicked myself cos I knew exactly how it happened, when and why.

I think most of us (if you're honest enough) have stories like this to tell. Mine is very similar to KR's. Long, long time time ago I raced go-karts, & it was a common practice to stuff a rag in the top of the carby when washing your kart. I arrived at a race meeting once & the motor failed to start, bear in mind that these things have to be push started. After everyone was exhausted pushing me around, following checking the fuel, spark & jet settings, I loaded up & went home without even getting on the starting grid. Next day I was about to strip down the carby when I found the rag still stuffed in there.
I never made that mistake ever again.

Hi guys
Good to see that we all make mistakes
Well i came home tonight and stripped the manifold down again,checked and double checked everything,put it all back together and it ran mint,turned it off. Finished putting on injector plug steel clips then topped up the water,started it up and it wouldnt run,went and wiggled the injector plugs and it ran sweet again,it was the bloody injector plugs,one injector wasnt fireing so when i pumped the gas it died because it wasnt getting enough fuel.
No bent valves either, touch wood, runs smooth with no missing or anything :roll: :beer

Mistakes
We all make mistakes, but I did notice that some wife's were at the start of them rofl When working on the car it is a good idea to have the family go out! Hard to arrange some times but worth it :D

Not sure if you saw the major stuff up at todays V8 Supercar race at Ipswich Raceway. Team Vodafone had their cars qualify for todays 200km race in P1 & P2, but when they put their Car 88 of Jamie Whincup on the grid, they forgot to take out the trumpet cover over the air intake, effectively choking the motor. The car limped back into pit-lane to be fixed & started rear-of-field. Even top professional teams have bad days as well.
