I actually wouldn't mind an E39A Galant VR-4 or a C61A Lancer/Mirage Cyborg, but unsure of the price/availability of them over there.

Where would I start looking for cars other than fleabay and carsales?

Hamilton vs Brisbane
Well um Hamilton is a hole and Brisbane rocks :)

We have good weather, better paying jobs and its a much nicer place to hang out.

Cars, Aus has about 1/3 of the models you are used to, and most of the cheap ones are true shit boxes. You on have to get your car checked when its being sold and many of the "checkers" dont.

fuel is cheap but regos are expencive.

Try www.carsales.com.au or ebay.com.au

lol, fuel ain't cheap here in syd.. we're paying close to 1.60 a litre for 98 octane.. I remember back in 2001 it was still 85c for premium.. so almost double in 10 years. what's it like up in qld?

the 4g63 vr-4 galants seem to be in the 4-8k range frm what i've seen.. a few heavily modded ones pop up for sale now and again. The cheapest v6 one i've seen was 10k.

Ahh the days of when I could afford to have a daily driven modded rotor.

Pretty much you can forget all the cool cars like cyborgs (never got them) etc etc.

We pay about $2.05/L for petrol so when you take into account the exchange rate, we're paying about the same for gas as you guys.

I like Brisbane but like everywhere it has it's flaws. Public transport can be a hassle and traffic congestion in & out of the city is a drag. Aus in general is also becoming a nanny state, where the gumbyment has to protect us from ourselves.
Every other person you meet in the street is from NZ so you will feel right at home too.

DG, have you considered looking at my part of Australia. No cyclones, no earthquakes, no floods, no traffic jams, no polution.
The climate is similar to NZ. The countryside is lush & green for most of the year. Housing (both rental & purchase) is dirt cheap, & with your skills, finding employment would not take long.
Furthermore, there are about 10 Starions here in a small city of 25,000, possibly the most number of Starions per head of population anywhere in Australia.

or maybe I'm just biassed .....

dragging this back up, I will touch down in Brisbane tues 23rd at about 5pm. Will be spending the rest of the week looking for a job and a sub $2k car, if anyone knows of either going.

Regarding the cars, I'm noticing many of them are for sale without RWC and rego (and therefore no plates). Why is this? Do people get a refund of the rego cost if not transferred?

How much does an RWC inspection cost and what do they cover? I notice one seller said their car needed a thermostat for a RWC - are they really that strict??

How much does 12 months worth of rego cost?

Am I correct in assuming that a car must have a RWC before you can transfer the rego from the old owner to the new owner? What about buying a car without a RWC, do you just go get it a RWC, and go register it with new plates once it passes? Do you think it's worth finding a car with no RWC needing minor fixes for cheap or is it just best to find a car with RWC and rego to begin with?

How do you go about driving a car around with no plates say for example when test driving or driving around solely for the purpose of repairs in order to obtain a RWC?

Thanks guys!

Rego $641 for a 4 cylinder
Must have inspection/ roadworthy certificate to transfer or sell a regoed car
People cancel rego and get refunded the balance of the fees imho due to the car having too many faults that require repair to sell it with rego.
If you buy from a dealer the title is guaranteed BUT IF YOU BUY PRIVATELY GET A REVS CHECK to ensure there are no moneys owing or stolen.
Don't forget to call me when you are here. :) :beer
