the group A gemini i got last year had an R154 in it, i'd be surprised if one didnt fit a starion tunnel.. they're a pretty wide flat box.
Fibreglass airdams $370, fibreglass front bumpers $260, reco drag links $165, alloy radiators $925 (unpolished), h/l switch rebuilds $125, all plus freight.

Redzone is right, even though the R154 is a bigger and heavier box (and a heap stronger), the actual width of it isn't much different to the W series.

I looked into this when I first converted to a W series. Unfortunately in the Scorpion tunnel, there is approximately 1mm of clearance for the W series and the R154 would have required a bit of modification, but it's not substantially wider. In hind sight, I should have gone down the R154 or maybe even Mazda gearbox path instead of the W series.

The other consideration is weight - the R154 weighs substantially more than the W series, but since it sits right in the middle of your car, I doubt you would notice any handling differences.

And of course, there is the dollars....the R154 is substantially more costly than a W series.

if i remember right, the r154 is about 10kg heaver than the W5x box.

Lummy, why do you feel the mazda box would have been better?

From the people I've spoken to, they shift better at high RPM and they also appear (although I have no hard proof to back it up) to be stronger.

The R154 handles a truck load of HP and from all reports, shifts very well too.

other than the weight and expense, the R154 is king! the reason they're expensive is just a case of supply and demand...

Toyota has the best box. The rx7 naturally revs higher than most cars, thats why people make the claim to a smoother shift at higher rpm (because it would make sense). I have never found the fc box to shift smoothly at any rpm, even with the engine off!

I have never driven an fc box with a fresh rebuild or aftermarket components installed either, only a box with 60 - 120k k's on it. More importantly I suppose is the cost to rebuild and or install after market components to the rx7 box. If you were spending the extra money than you would naturally r154. After all, the rotary guys stick these and w series boxes behind their own engines.

The R154 isn't as nice as a W55-9 in regards to shifting but it's still not a bad box. I'll be using one behind my V6 shortly. Am wondering if it's going to fit into my tunnel though, as above they supposedly fit into a Starion fine but not into a Sapporo/Scorpion?
