when i was 17 a mates dad bought him a vb commodore with a jim perkins stroker in it, a few later months he ripped it in half and died instantly. for the first 3 years of my license i drove like a nan.
i rsepect the dangers champ, and being older doesnt make you any more aware or prepared for something unexpected, especially if you are of the belief that opening the throttle on a deserted national highway is a sure way to die.
but seeing as i and people i trust built the car and every suspension component is upgraded and 500km old, there is no real or credible risk in doing 200 when there is no one around on a 4 lane highway, apart from the holden a hundred metres behind.

I would much rather race this in the forest with all the first aid close by as Rad pointed out, then do 200 in your car.
Don't get me wrong bud, speed is addictive and great fun (in the right place it's even more fun!) It sucks that your local track is going to waste. Is there a club that run it?? Maybe find them, get involved and get some action going to fix it up?
I don't know what part of Tassie your in, but if you have a track close it is worth looking into. We just lost Oran park race way to build houses :glare: I'm not a track goer I'm a rally hero rofl But to see the track go is wrong!!!!!!!! And most of the rally's are 2 or 3 hours drive away. That and my staz is not ready yet.

The holidays are almost over (i'm working today, so mine already are), so it's time this little fiasco ended as well.
We have fast cars because we like driving them.. well.. fast, of course.
It's always better done in a "safe" environment - aka a purpose built track. Mick's car belongs to him and no one else (there's no money owing on it right?? ;) ). If he feels what he did was ok, then it's his business. Nobody else has to agree or disagree with him. The chances of someone getting hurt are much higher on public roads given the speed he may or may not have been travelling, but at this stage, no one got hurt, so let's leave it at that.
Speed limits are an arbitrary number chosen by people who know jack shit about cars. Most of the speed limits have not been changed since the 60s or 70s, yet we have much better cars with things like disc brakes and the like. Anyone's argument that it is unsafe to drive 10 over the limit or 20 over the limit is as arbitrary as the speed limit itself. In fact, some drivers are unsafe even when driving at half of the enforced limit. Rad is an old fart ( LOL ), but i'm pretty certain his reflexes are a hundred times better than anyone his age. While he chooses to stick to the legal limits on the roads, I would vouch that he would be a safe driver even if he did not have a speedometer to look at.

If you kill someone, it's not something you can take back, and it's something you'll have to live with. A guy I know stole his dad's car 12 years ago.. he hit a pole, and his mate died instantly. His wife tells me he still wakes up from nightmares about it every now and then. He hasn't driven since. Another guy I know of ran over a bike in his 4wd, cos he simply didn't bother checking his blind spot. Was only doing 60 in a 60 zone. Bike rider died, and he still cries to God about it. Become a religious man ever since. Still drives though - but is extremely cautious now. Accident was 4 years ago.
And for the record, I was the one who made the crack about oldie going everywhere sideways, and it was a joke - I have never seen oldie drive (unfortunately for me, i've never even met him). I refer to the pictures of him at events on various tracks, not on the roads.

anyone remember that steering wheel thing? holding onto that, paying attention and being cautious of everything; never heard of both those things contributing to a single vehicle accident, thats my plan of attack... probably not good enough though.

Telling someone younger what they should think isnt wise because you havent done anything in the grand scheme of things. i know what a race car looks like too, they had one in tassie once.

why is the idea of speed always coupled to the idea that if you do there is guaranteed to be a fatality? because we believe what we read in the paper and on the news... thought on this forum some would be better than that.

im putting together a history of the cars build at the moment, hopefully it will show why i'd never, ever take the slightest unreasonable risk in it.

thrash baskerville is slogged out, potholed drift track now. but its the only option so will replace suspension more regularly to do, our company is trying to organise a day there in the next month i think, simmons doesnt get raced very often i dont think,
