Mick if you are going to quote me please read my thread carefully and you will see that I was not driving but simply quoting my tuner. All the events I compete in must have ambos or1st aid qualified people plus flag/ fire marshals in attendance so help is not far away should it be neededMick wrote:ah i get you a bit more now... and appreciate your concern.
food for thought though, in your 16v stroker thread you talk about "how loose your car is in 3rd gear in the dry", but because you were driving and know you can handle it its ok ? so maybe dont assume you're the only one allowed and able to wheel.
our track has no sort of ambo standby, and firies are only your word telling the caretaker you've got an extiguisher on hand...
maybe its because ive only started driving the car again after 4 years that its nice to stretch the legs... on a 4 lane highway, not in the burbs.
was mostly trying to spread a little bit of easter cheer knowing that a holden owner is probably regretting his $70000 investment.
peace and good luck with the rx7 box.

righto rad, was looking at the inference that you drive everywhere sideways and that you thought that was cool/funny.

so you're a hero because you rally? and a bloke died on near you? guess how many times ive heard that and how much it affects my driving?
nil.
when i was 17 a mates dad bought him a vb commodore with a jim perkins stroker in it, a few later months he ripped it in half and died instantly. for the first 3 years of my license i drove like a nan.
i rsepect the dangers champ, and being older doesnt make you any more aware or prepared for something unexpected, especially if you are of the belief that opening the throttle on a deserted national highway is a sure way to die.
but seeing as i and people i trust built the car and every suspension component is upgraded and 500km old, there is no real or credible risk in doing 200 when there is no one around on a 4 lane highway, apart from the holden a hundred metres behind.
you assume im young why?
I said with age comes wisdom. My age not yours mate. As for condescending, if that's how you take it. In Sydney we don't have HWY's with no one on them so what your able to do with no one around is good luck to you. I'm no hero because I rally (your tone points to your age) I was just pointing out the safety equipment that a rally car has. See pics here http://forums.austarion.com/viewtopic.php?t=13633
I would much rather race this in the forest with all the first aid close by as Rad pointed out, then do 200 in your car.
Don't get me wrong bud, speed is addictive and great fun (in the right place it's even more fun!) It sucks that your local track is going to waste. Is there a club that run it?? Maybe find them, get involved and get some action going to fix it up?
I don't know what part of Tassie your in, but if you have a track close it is worth looking into. We just lost Oran park race way to build houses :glare: I'm not a track goer I'm a rally hero rofl But to see the track go is wrong!!!!!!!! And most of the rally's are 2 or 3 hours drive away. That and my staz is not ready yet.
Enjoy your car mate and try not to upset too many Holden repayment makers :beer
Cheers Jason
ok guys, that's quite enough.
The holidays are almost over (i'm working today, so mine already are), so it's time this little fiasco ended as well.
We have fast cars because we like driving them.. well.. fast, of course.
It's always better done in a "safe" environment - aka a purpose built track. Mick's car belongs to him and no one else (there's no money owing on it right?? ;) ). If he feels what he did was ok, then it's his business. Nobody else has to agree or disagree with him. The chances of someone getting hurt are much higher on public roads given the speed he may or may not have been travelling, but at this stage, no one got hurt, so let's leave it at that.
Speed limits are an arbitrary number chosen by people who know jack shit about cars. Most of the speed limits have not been changed since the 60s or 70s, yet we have much better cars with things like disc brakes and the like. Anyone's argument that it is unsafe to drive 10 over the limit or 20 over the limit is as arbitrary as the speed limit itself. In fact, some drivers are unsafe even when driving at half of the enforced limit. Rad is an old fart ( LOL ), but i'm pretty certain his reflexes are a hundred times better than anyone his age. While he chooses to stick to the legal limits on the roads, I would vouch that he would be a safe driver even if he did not have a speedometer to look at.
Mick, the speed limits in most places are actually determined by the pedestrian activity in the area. I think what everyone is trying to say, is please just be careful. If you kill someone, it's not something you can take back, and it's something you'll have to live with. A guy I know stole his dad's car 12 years ago.. he hit a pole, and his mate died instantly. His wife tells me he still wakes up from nightmares about it every now and then. He hasn't driven since. Another guy I know of ran over a bike in his 4wd, cos he simply didn't bother checking his blind spot. Was only doing 60 in a 60 zone. Bike rider died, and he still cries to God about it. Become a religious man ever since. Still drives though - but is extremely cautious now. Accident was 4 years ago.
And for the record, I was the one who made the crack about oldie going everywhere sideways, and it was a joke - I have never seen oldie drive (unfortunately for me, i've never even met him). I refer to the pictures of him at events on various tracks, not on the roads.

haha, i guess i was a bit late with the death comments.. but Mick, it's a very different thing if you are a factor to the cause of death.. watching someone die is one thing, feeling responsible/guilty for someone's death is a whole new can of worms..

Been watching this from the start...made sense to me to just sit back, I could see exactly where it was going to go.
I've only been involved in one "slinging match" a long time ago on Austarion and I wasn't doing the slinging. At the end of the day nobody gives a shit about your side of the story as much as you do.
So Mick, by all means boast about your exploits online. But if they are illegal, not possible or credible, someone objects to what you say you've done, or you sound like a wanker or whatever, don't expect not to be opposed.
Instead, you can defend your story as much as your ego drives you and
continue down a path that doesn't improve.
You've gained credibility by building a great car but then lost it by being a bit of a tool. And I imagine that might be important to you.
I don't take sides nor want brownie points or anything but Uncle Thrash and his reasoned opinion fairly closely resembles my own.
Now, let it go and finish your masterpiece! I'll sell you a three piece fibreglass rear wing when they're done...

haha i cant believe that no one on this forum has ever broken the speed limit!!!!
no drag strip and no decent race track, cool i'll put it back in the shed for another 5 years, head inside and berate anyone younger than me for daring to step out of line.
anyone remember that steering wheel thing? holding onto that, paying attention and being cautious of everything; never heard of both those things contributing to a single vehicle accident, thats my plan of attack... probably not good enough though.
jason - im 25, i do appreciate your words of actual concern but you are arrogant to guage my age by the way i write on the net, and being old does not in itself grant you any wisdom. Telling someone younger what they should think isnt wise because you havent done anything in the grand scheme of things. i know what a race car looks like too, they had one in tassie once.
enthuzed - appreciate your words, but dont care if i look like a tool to someone ive never met, and luckily im safe from all the do gooders and know alls down here in tassie.
thrash - appreciate your words, i know what a speed limit is, never had a ticket in the starion, and only one ever. yeah i do own the car, 25 grand in hard earned coming from a lower class family means the car is very important, not in a great hurry to ruin it.
why is the idea of speed always coupled to the idea that if you do there is guaranteed to be a fatality? because we believe what we read in the paper and on the news... thought on this forum some would be better than that.
i appreciate all your concern, i truly do, but im not going to get old wishing i'd had more of a go.
im putting together a history of the cars build at the moment, hopefully it will show why i'd never, ever take the slightest unreasonable risk in it.
