I have got a new(2nd hand) crank, new bearings, had the head reconditioned (3angle valves/seats/stem seals) now its getting close to rebuild time and i need gaskets... just wondering what kind of $$$$$$ i need to part with to get all gaskets i need.
also should I replace head and rod bolts? if so anybody got any idea what they're worth?
and last but not least, the rings seem pretty good but if they're cheap enough I would be tempted to do them too so $$$$ on them too?

any help appreciated

87 GSR-V, Factory DASH, Rebuilt bottom end with arp rod bolts and balance shafts removed, head reconed with 3 angle valve grind, TD05 housing machined out to take Garrett T4 internals, rebuilt and cryoed gearbox

Alex do it once and do it right because If you can't afford to do it right then wait till you can as it will cost more if you have to do it twice

Thats the plan but i need to know how much I'm going to have to save up and also the best place to get these things

I buy everything for my 4G63 from the US. ARP head stud kit was USD$80, Wiseco pistons, rings, pins, etc was $400, cometic full gasket set (minus head gasket) $80. I already had ARP rod bolts, so not sure on the price for those.

There's two main down-sides to buying from the US - delivery time and the fact that you're pretty much stuck with whatever they send (ie, if they get it wrong, it's not worth the hassle to send it back for replacement). If you're not in a hurry and you order carefully, it's generally around half of what you'll pay here in Australia (our retailers are greedy fuckers that wouldn't know what competition was if it smacked them in the face).

Delivery is also expensive, but even when you add the delivery cost, it still works out ridiculously cheaper than any Aussie retailer. Some may say that I'm not supporting local business and that will lead to the eventual end of Aussie retailers. I believe Aussie retailers need to get their act together and realise that the world is now a very small place - they need to get competitive on the global scene.

Take advantage of the strong Aussie dollar and buy everything you need in one hit. Delivery time is generally around 2 weeks - and about 5 days of that is our customs taking their time before releasing it.

Keep your purchase under $1000 and there is no GST or customs duty to pay.

I use nolimitmotorsport.com.au they've got excellent prices and a great range of products.

I also agree with the above posts, do it once and do it right - once it's all together, it's too late. Buy the best products you can and make sure someone who knows what they're doing puts it all together.

I totally agree with Lummy. There is a huge amount of 4g63 stuff available from the USA at far cheaper prices than retailers in Aus or NZ charge.
Ive bought most of my stuff for my new engine from there.
Definitely worth doing head and rod bolts as they are cheap enough and good peace of mind

There are a myriad of good websites to choose from in the US, which is why prices are low, because competition is fierce.

I'm not saying these guys are the cheapest, but they are cheap and if you talk to them via e-mail, they'll go slightly below their advertised price too.

You won't get a head set in the USA, they are available here I have a part number at work, not cheap compared to a 8 valve one.
All the other stuff you can get locally easily as well and cheap enough not to bother shipping them across the planet.

If that's true, then you're very lucky. EVERYTHING I've bought from the US (and that's a lot) has represented a significant saving over local retail prices.

Yes but you guys are dealing in high power twin cams :wink:

I'm not sure about the rod bolts but everything should be reasonably easy to buy, but if you are buying from the USA now is a good time while their dollar is in a freefall, I couldn't be bothered waiting myself and if wrong parts get sent just throws everything back another few weeks.

Yeah I'll price some stuff and pm you but need info.

Again I'm not sure on rod bolts are vr4 the same?
Standard size pistons? also there are two different pistons for dash engines, probably easier to get rings with actual piston samples.
You said head was reconditioned, has it new valve stem seals? if yes and inlet gasket is good you could get away with just a head gasket.

I know the previous owner had the engine done not all that long ago, so I guess its up to you how much you replace.
