alternator?! you prick.
hi everyone.
My battery isn't charging. Not a particularly difficult problem I'm sure. battery = 12.7V car not running.
battery = 10.3V car running.
before pulling out the alternator is there anything else I should check?
If we agree it's the alternator then how do I get it out?
cheers Dave

My JA has perfect motor - FMIC - forgies - high flow head but...rusted front guards and keyed on every panel. Time to get serious or time to take it to the tip.
Prick ? Dave, the alternator is easy to get out. there are basically two bolts you need to undo. the first one is up top and it sits in a long arched backet with a long slot in it that you use to tension the alternator with. the next one you need to undo is a very long bolt at the back down low, this holds it to the block. I cant recall if the alternator belt is the first one off the rank or not so you may need to pull another belt off first to get to it if you are changing the belt as well. cheers.

Biggest thing to remember is to undo the negative battery terminal first, or you could let the smoke out if something hits something it's not supposed to..

hi guys, started taking it out today.
The bottom bolt (the one holding it to the block) doesn't seem to be the standard one. It has a square head and no matter what I do i can't get it to turn.
Any help?

There is a long app 50 mm nut on the other end of that bolt .The square front of the long bolt is locked in between castings to stop it turningLummy wrote:That is the standard bolt!
Undo it from the other end (nut) and tap it out.

I took all the bolts etc off. Now it's loose but can't get it out because of it's size. Do you remove the thermo fan?

Hi madeofmilo!
I notice you're in Melbourne's east.
I am also in Melbourne, north-east, if you like I don't mind dropping by with a Starion to compare alternators and perhaps give you a hand. I will be out the East side on Monday coming if you have the day off as well for Melb cup.
Anyway let me know how you go.
My number is 0413 781 764 if you're keen.

Hi mate. That sounds good. Around mid-morning and lunch. Will give you a call tomorrow to tee it up. If you drink beer and play pool then you and I are going to be buddies.
Cheers Dave.

Gimme a yell if you're still wanting me to take a look at tomorrow. Altho I'm realising there's probly nothing I can tell you about it that you don't already know. From the description it definitely sounds dead. But yeh I'm happy to take a look anyway. All I would really be able to do is measure the output straight from it but it seems pretty conclusive, and with it out of the vehicle I'm not even much use with that.
See wot u think.
