WTB: Strut tops needed in good condition

Post by MitsuMadness »

I'm chasing some front strut tops to finish off the roadworthy for my new Widebody! (and yes, I believe the strut TOPS are the same for narrow and widebody, looking at my other starions they look the same too)

My mechanic found that the rubber around the top of my current ones is really cracked, and needs replacing. I checked my other cars, but they're all a bit cracked as well, and it would be better if I didn't have to go to the trouble of swapping some with another car.

So if anyone has some, that would save me the effort and finish my roadworthy!
Otherwise, does anyone know the legality of having adjustable camber tops on the road? For example, would Mookeeh adjustable camber tops pass a roadworthy or have to be engineered over here? My suspicion is that they wouldn't pass.

Any help appreciated :)

Here's a pic of what I mean by strut top in case it isn't too clear.
If you view this from the TOP end (which you can't see in the photo), that is where mine is very cracked.
(this is just a photo I found of a strut, so may not be exactly the same as Starion - but just for illustration)

dun dun DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

the next problem facing starion owners..

you can get them remade but adjustable ones are cheaper.

why wouldnt adjustable ones be ok? i know it's ok up here. maybe call the d.o.t. down there.

Haha I like the dramatic music at the start of your post...

Yeh, and adjustable ones are nicer too :)

I just thought since it's a suspension part, it probly would have to be engineered & failure tested etc like they seem to do with everything.

I'll chat with my mechanic and see what he says as well, and see if I can find anyone in our VicRoads (d.o.t.) that actually has an answer to anything haha

But that is more encouraging to hear anyway.

Hi there,

I can have new ones made here in Brisbane. I own a set of molds after i had mine done. Just need some old front tops. They rebuild the centre and are realy good quality. I will find out the price for you.

They are readily available in the US, problem is the shipping as most ebay sellers offer UPS postage only. Quick but expensive!

Eg., http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... MEWAX%3AIT

With regard to the widey strut tops, I got told the pivot bearings were fine when the struts were replaced. Just surface cracking, but yes it would be nice to have new ones!!

Maybe a group buy?

Cool that looks pretty good! :)

Also found these, altho they're in the US too:

Yeh it was just the cracking my mechanic picked on. Good to know the bearings are good though. The ones in my white GSR-V are pretty squeaky. Interestingly he's not too concerned about the height, it seems ok.

Sonic, will be interesting to hear what your option may cost too!

Thanks everyone :)

So I've ordered a set of those ones I mentioned above off eBay from the states... They look the most like the factory ones and look pretty good.
Will post here how good they are once they arrive. They're a bit more expensive than some but certainly look pretty good quality.

Good score, they look impressive. I think the adjustable ones would be fine but like anything once something looks modified, it opens up pandoras box.
Never argue with an idiot, it brings you down to their level and they beat you with experience.

Yeah MM, nice find!

I knew the ones I had sitting around weren't up to scratch hence the reason I didn't mention them.

The ebay ones are listed as rears. Photo does not look like rears, but it could be a file photo.

MrBishi thanks! Yeh I had been wondering about that and then I found another seperate auction for the rears, and that had more confusing info in that field. Apparently they just got the description wrong, but the auction is for what is actually in the photo.

So that's a bit of a relief cos it would suck to get rears sent over and then have to re-order!

Still waiting for them to 100% confirm that they're sending me fronts though.

I recently got a new pair of rear KYB strut tops out of the US on eBay for about AU$120 including shipping. I had to redrill the shocker mounting hole to suit my larger shocker shafts, but should be correct size for standard Starion shocks.

Yeh the KYB ones do look pretty good.

I found out the ones I ordered ARE rear ones cos they confirmed for me. So am getting some of the KYB ones instead now. Cheaper anyway!
That first site seems to have all their descriptions confused, some of their other descriptions are messed up even more.

Ok, so my KYB ones arrived, and look great, nice, I'm going to install them!

BUT also the other ones on eBay arrived, and even though the guy said, yeh they're REAR ones, when they arrived, they ARE FRONT ones! Bit odd. Ah well, now I have a spare set of front ones from him too. Might put them on one of the other cars if I need to.

Will hopefully install this weekend :)
