See, this is what I never understood about why Mals car took so long to sell, people are talking about importing LHD shells and converting them to
RHD. Imagine the amount of BS you would have to go through to get all this certified and how much the final thing would end up costing. Mal had a beautiful widey that if anyone was really this keen could have just bought it and easily converted it to a manual if they had wanted to. Im not meaning to have a go at anyone but it just amazes me how sometimes all of us, including me cant see the simplest solution for a problem when the answer is right in front of us. If anyone really wanted a widey bad enough to buy a shell, transport it to a shipping terminal, pay for a container, pay for the shippping costs, pay GST on it, strip it, find a narrow body with a good interior, strip it, transplant everything, convert steering boxes, air-con units, headlights, side intrusion bars, seat belts etc etc etc surely buying an australian registered widey and converting it to a manual would have been much simpler yes ?

To get a LHD converted it would need to be a pre 1989 model. After the cost of conversion with the donar car ????, it would need to be complied, about $1500 with engineers certificate!Adriano wrote:Does anyone know if there would be anything special requires to reshell a RHD narrowbody into a LHD widebody assuming the widebody was a roller?
I reckon if you got change out of $15K with buying & shipping the import plus the building of...you'd be lucky!
If you planted the widebody bits on the narrow you might save a bit, but not much. Also, you might get the advantage of better or lack of emmission requirements on the JA/JB!
So yes, Vulpes is right...simpler to get one in RHD but getting harder to find one in Japan!! It's also harder to find a spare $10-15K around these days!
Imports.

I agree with all the above - Mal's car is a very deal but does (by his own admission) need paint and to do black properly is not a cheap exercise but yes I agree totally. I guess you just see a good complete car going for a grand and that makes you think doesnt it.
I also agree with you Mal on the money side of things - trying to find $10-15 is bloody hard atm let alone 10-15K.

Never argue with an idiot, it brings you down to their level and they beat you with experience.
