completely irrelevant and i apologise for hijacking this thread, but when i look at this car, i wonder.. what if you took the front end and put it on a starion? lights.. grill.. bonnets.. guards.. bumper.. would look rather similar to the 4wd staz.... no?

perhaps someone should buy the front of the car for this purpose :D

The Sapporo is pretty much a Starion with a Scorpion body. All the underpinnings are the same, irs, diff, struts, engine, gearbox and so on.
Weather the front panels are interchangable I would not know.

also got the engine running today, sounds awesome! little bit of popping out the back but nothing thats not expected. bit of oil coming from the turbo through the intake if fairly sure.

going to buy a crane in next few days and get engine onto a stand and have a look at the bores and bearings.

It's actually either a Galant GSR or an Eterna GSR - I can't quite figure out which one it is. It has the incorrect front grill on it anyhow which makes it more difficult to distinguish between the two.

I could be keen for the plastic grill from the lower valance - it comes out in two pieces so it shouldn't be a large parcel to send over to NZ. Perhaps some other misc interior trim as well.

It will also be a 80, 81 or 82 model - they were facelifted part way through '82 with some interior and exterior changes, as well as some small mechanical changes too.

The rear subframe is not quite identical to the Starion, it shares the same open diff and torque tube as the small Starion diff, but the rear brake lines run along the subframe on yours as opposed to running along the body on the Starion. There is also less gusset supports around the inner rear arm mounts on the U shaped crossmember. If yours is a 1980 model the torque tube will be solid mounted to the front crossmember as opposed to being insulated with rubber bushes like 1981 onwards models and Starions.

The injection system is also more primitive than the Starion type a or type 1 unit, it has no knock sensor and if you pull the wire off which attaches to the BOV and boost sensor mounted on the compressor housing of the turbo, there should no longer be a boost cut at 10psi.

Just a bit of useless info for ya.

DG, dont you mean the hose between the wastegate actuator and the compressor housing? There's no factory BOVs on these cars.

Galant GTO, given this model is definitely an import and in many ways like a Starion, does it have the headlight reminder music (not the buzzer of the Aust model)
If yes, could you please pop the base of back seat up and the trim beside it on the driver's side to see if there is small module box connected to a wiring loom. Think it's about an 8 or 10 pin plug, will dig up a photo and add it here.

Haha.. do you want me to prove you wrong? All due respect, while these things went onto become the basis for the Starion they do have some distinct differences from the Starion - and the addition of a factory BOV built into the TC05 turbo compressor housing is one of them!

*Edit* upon looking at the engine bay pics again it appears to NOT have the original TC05 turbo, but I can post pics of my original turbo with the BOV built into it.

*Double edit* - that 'box' you're talking about is the ETACS box and it's mounted under the front passenger seat on the 4th gen coupes, I assume it should be in the same spot for the import Starions.

Sounds similar to a volvo 740turbo, they had a mitsubishi turbo with a built in BOV in the compressor housing casting

Definitely some differences DG with the Aussie cars verses Jap/NZ cars....

The majority of our cars (JA and JB Starions) have the TC06-11a-8 turbo as standard. The JDs came out with the smaller TC05-12a-6.

Be interesting to see the pics of the TC05s your cars came with, I've got one but it's nothing like what you describe.

As for the headlight reminder, I have an ETACS box thanks to you under my passenger seat (it fixed my rear demister issue and enabled me to get the car roadworthy) yet it still doesn't work. I'm wondering whether the speed reminder chime that I disconnected is the same unit used for the headlights.
