Alternator wiring

Post by rodney007 »

Hey guys, replacing alternator and all fits well except with plug with white and blue wires, its a different plug slightly bigger is required.

can this still be wired up?

the + terminal fits and car charges fine above 1.5k RPM but the connector is required to complete that circuit.

thanks

Yep, I've come across two different plug set ups in these things. They all work in the same manner, so it's fine to just wire it up as you had it before - or if you want it even neater, you'll be able to find a nice plug that fits at Autobarn or similar shop.

While we're talking about alternators, does anyone know what Amps the standard Starion alternator is rated at?

I'm looking at an after-market one that is 100amps and wondering if it's a higher output than stock?

Cheers.

This thread has reminded me of a problem my car has. If you don't mind me taking over yours sorry

Everytime i start the car, the alternator has to be spun above 2.5k rpm before it will charge. After that , it works perfectly no matter what revs.
Any ideas on what that might be a symptom of?

mine is working like yours. When I start the car, at idle speed the generator is not charge, and when the RPM goes above 2500, the generator starts to work, and after that, it is charging at all revs. I think it is normal, I found the same issue on some ON and OFFtopic cars.

This is defiantely not normal, mine charges as soon as I start the car and don't need to put revs on it.

As Old Fart has said the alternator is not exciting properly.

Could be your exciter wire. There's a wire going to the alternator with a 12v supply (not the big-ass one going to the battery/starter motor). Check that it is delivering 12v to the alternator on start-up and below 2500rpm (or wherever it starts working for you).

The alternator wont work without this exciter.

i think it is not a big problem, when you start your car, you will rev it above 2500, and the alternator will charge the battery.
Who use turbo-cars under 2500?

Thanks Lummy will check that out this weekend. Sounds like that is what it could be.
