Crank: knife-edged?

Post by Lummy »

Hi all,

I know nothing about cranks, however I currently have my sump off and couldn't help but notice that my crank wasn't completely stock-looking.

Is this considered to be knife-edged or is it just a bit of grinding to balance it up? Not all counter-weights are done evenly - some have very little grinding, some have quite a bit.

It looks like they did some work to your crank, but they did very little work.

They are said to improve responce by being lighter as well as having less drag.
If you want to see some radical cranks google BUTCHER CRANKS

is it correct to assume that this sort of mod would have an impact on response and driveability similar to that of a lightened flywheel?

I'm also assuming the machine shop needs to take care to ensure that the end product is balanced yes?

Mate it was machined by a fitter machinist who competed in Targa Tasie 3 times and finished. It was for but never got into his lancer 2000
HE WAS 73 YEARS YOUNG THEN But unfortunately fell off the roof of s new shed he was building :wtf:
If you are serious I would have it checked to ensure that it is A OK & find out the postage to NZ

By "fix it " hopefully that does not involve grinding it undersize as that will require re nitradeing .IMHO you will be better off with a crank that tests straight and only requires linishing of the bearing surfaces

have not yet taken the crank for a proper assessment but it will probably need a 30-40thou grind
