Not that I know of.

It'll work in anything tho

Id say its a good idea for the modified Starion. Im not sure how it senses the gears but it allows you to run different boost levels per gear, and on/off WOT. As well as hundreds of other features, including its share accuracy (it even measures how long it takes to open the actuator, and configures itself accordingly).

Means you can set it up so you aren't doing 18psi in 1st gear, wasting your tyres and slowing you down.

Bit of an expensive toy if you only plan on running 8-14psi tho

Yes i have got one on my car, with aftermarket computer set up,when setting it up you have read the direction,as i am still playing with mine,as it does work well, very sensitive, when you alter it,it good having the extra reouts of rpm, etc. As i would like to try a turbosmart eboost to compare,as you can make the turbo boost very early, but really needs to be done on a dyno as mine will be,as soon as i finish my inlet manifold,so all can be retuned again.

The only way the eBoost could reduce lag would be to ensure the wastegate is completely closed until just before cut time. Im sure the AVC-R can do this.

Also the eBoost (having been in cars with it), just sets a single boost level (well two, high and low). AVC-R can be tuned per gear, rpm, and many many other conditions.

This is what I've picked up from seeing in action, and researching each product.

Wouldn't it be easier to let the aftermarket ECU control everything? Why have another black box?

well that 'extra black box' is silver, with a blue dot matrix display!

Its also easy to tune in the car, but to be honest for me, I have 3 DIN slots, singles, Im thinking Apexi SAFC-II, AVC-R, and stereo :)

bling bling!

Seriously though, I think the features of the AVC-R outperform the boost control features of some ECUs. e.g. most turbo owners Ive met with Link ECUs use an aftermarket boost controller, as the Link+ is very laggy, and featureless when regarding boost control.

I wouldn't pay new prices, I'd only pay second hand. When new its almost cheaper to buy an ECU by itself. 2nd hand they are around 600NZ for the blue screen model. SAFC blue screens vary from 200-400. It is common for people to remove the Apexi items when upgrading to a higher quality ecu like a Haltec E6K, or Motec

So you're paying for a pretty blue screen.

Instead of buying a 2nd rate ECU and a pretty blue screen it seems it would make more sense to just buy a more capable ECU in the first place.

Unless the pretty blue screen is the real reason for buying this piece of equipment....

AVC-R is beneficial if:

- you need different boost levels per gear/rpm for traction
- you have already installed a good ECU, that doesnt have good boost control
- you are running a chipped factory ECU and need acurate boost control
- you want incabin digital boost analysis and adjustment - often you may need to lower the boost 1psi on a hot day, or maybe raise it 1 or 2 psi on cold nights.

pretty blue screen

Post by davidbek95 »

Yes i like the pretty blue screen, but also have autronic that also controlls boost as i can have 2 setting with the autronic, but if i want change something out comes the laptop to alter it,but autronic software is more friendlier to use than the avc-r.Depends if you like it as i got mine at a good price as the bloke told me he needs the money.

hmmmm....very hatrd to beleive that could be the only difference though....
but if they perform the same duties then i guess it would be worth while wiring it up...
the only problem here is i dont have the wiring diagram...
wondering if anyone knows where to get it....ive searched all over the web...
nothing on it....only the blue ones.

I think the black box model is the simple digital boost controller, with a few accuracy features built in. Without the blue screen configration will be an ass, and you dont get any of the graphs that can be used for diagnostics etc.

For free its a good score, but I think thats why it was free, I hope you have the wastegate solenoid to go with it? If not, its useless unless you order a new solenoid from APEX'i.
