Yup vr4 pistons have a 21mm pin which is the same as starion rods iirc. Comp ratio will be fine.

VR4 & Starion pistons (Aust car not Jap import) have virtually the same crown cc (approx 14cc). The crown design is a different shape for the VR4 as its designed with clearances for 4 valves instead of 2.

what about the japo import ones? how are they different? higher compression i'm assuming?

Jap vr4 evo ones are higher comp, and have ceramic coated crowns, plus they are quite cheap from ralliart

do you know what comp they are? aus spec vr4 is 7.8 i've been told, and aus spec staz is 7.5.. would the jap vr4 ones be 8.5?

dwlee, cheers for the photos, how thick is that inlet manifold spacer youre using? i was hoping i could get away with a thinner spacer by removing *some* of the meat on the inlet manifold to allow the injectors to fit. also wondering what you think the best way to adapt the fuel rail to suit the new injector positions is.

The spacer in the photos was original made to mate the evo4 manifold to a 4g61 head and as such is much thicker than is necessary for the evo1-3 head to evo4 manifold. The reason it is so thick (22mm) was to adapt the different port shape in the 4g61 head as smoothly as possible. The port in a 4g61 is slightly narrower and deeper than those in an evo head, but the port areas are approximately the same.

I am using the original fuel rail with the injectors in the head and not the manifold. The injector ports in the manifold are either welded closed or filled with high temperature epoxy. I couldn't see much point in using the injector ports in the manifold as the injector ports in the head would need to be filled and I did not want to do this in case I wanted to change heads.

ah ok, yeah i will definitely try for a thinner spacer, just to save on cost as much as anything else

on another note, why is it that i need to mess about with the oil pump, and swap balance shafts over anyway? whats to stop me from just swapping the pistons and crank pulley, and calling the bottom end done?

loom, AFM and ECU just showed up this morning :beer

Because the twin cam timing belt is wider, requiring the wider oil pump drivepulley, longer oil pump drive. However it has been years since i did this, so my memory is a bit hazy

I just made an adapter plate and can use all 8 injectors if i wanted to..

Just 4 actually connected at the moment:

No welding involved.. And it fits like it was made for a Starion in the way that it goes around the brake booster. (LHD)

And yes it works.. the car is actually running and has already survived a couple laps on the Nordschleife.

I use a complete 7 bolt engine with an adapterplate to mount the stock gearbox.
a evo 4 intake, evo 6 turbo with home made manifold
a evo 3 wire loom that i modified so it suits a starion and use a evo 8 Ecu because they are easy to reprogram.
A evo 4 ecu is possibly the worst ecu to pick, because you can't reprogram them. Evo 1-3 can be chipped, evo 5-8 can be flashed.
Evo 9 up has different plugs.

ah ok thanks. i guess i could try and get cheeky and run my starion oil pump and belt off the dohc pulley, but possibly not the best idea

does anyone know if the dohc 4g67 bottom end is similar to the dohc 4g63 in this respect? (crank, pulleys, oil pump etc). found one in bits for cheap
