later model evo head installation
hey guys, its been a very , very long time since i've been on here (heck, the last time i was, "dohc" was still a dirty word - now youve got a whole section devoted to it!
anyway, i'm still punting about in the same old dash starion as always. except now shes getting a bit tired in her advanced age. and coincidentally, i've been offered an evo 5 short block for $500. its a recon'd head but the block has a blown big end bearing. my starion bottom end is still strong.
so i'm seriously considering doing the swap, buit it seems like 90% of what you guys have documented is for the earlier model heads. is it feasible to do the conversion with a later model evo head? would really appreciate your thoughts on this. cheers

im not to sure on the later heads on the starion bottom end.
its just easy to bolt on the older heads on the starion block because the pretty much bolt on.

you will have to weld up the extra oil drain holes and make sure all other coolant holes etc line up, the manifolds being on opposite sides is only an advantage for us having rhd.. the other alternative to welding up those holes is to use a later model 4G63 or 4G64 RWD wideblock motor like from a triton or van, and build that up, however you cannot fit oil squirters and the 7 bolt have had problems with crankwalk apparently, although that only seems to affect owners with big clutches who sit at the lights with the clutch depressed often..stariontron wrote:hey guys, its been a very , very long time since i've been on here (heck, the last time i was, "dohc" was still a dirty word - now youve got a whole section devoted to it!

if you want to sell the dash stuff (manifolds and head etc) let me know..

hi again, just a quick update, managed to find an evo 2 head (its amazing how cheap evo stuff is now that drift cars are "cool" and 4wd drag cars arent!)
anyway next step for me is to find an inlet manifold and switch the throttle body over... for some reason, theres a lot of evo 4 ones for cheap, and no 1-3 manifolds. does anyone know if the evo 4 inlet manifold will bolt to the earlier head?
