is a microtech digi 1 worth buyng, or is it so archaic and old that its useless?

Its as you said, old and archaic. There are so many aftermarket computers around these days that are reasonably priced ya should be able to find something like an EMS stinger, microtech ltx or link that wil run your engine fine. im running the EMS and picked that up off trademe for $500 :)

sweet as. unfortunately the budget is kind of $1k for ecu and tuning but all the ecu's seem to be $1k by them self. will keep looking or just get megasquirt

Hmmm ya mite need to budget a lil more than that unless ya plan on tuning it yourself. Always the best plan to buy a ecu that your preferred tuner knows how to use well, rather than buying on cost or features, as it may end up costing more in the long run if the guy has to learn how to use it :)

I second what Oldie and Lunacy have said. Done scrimp on the ECU/Tuning and get the one your tuner is experienced in.

proper and thorough tuning will make or break your project and be the difference between :D and
