boost.. wat it really means?

Post by androoz »

my car boosts (according to my stock boost gauge, which seems to be working properly) to about 0.7 bar.

the previous owner claims the car hasn't been boosted.. i was under the impression that stock boost was 0.5 bar?

mods i have are 3" full exhaust coming off stock dump pipe, and NO cat :D

can anyone explain this to me a little? how much boost does it sound like im running?

well working on abouts

stock is about 8
1 bar is about 14-ish
so .5 bar is about 7-ish
so .7 bar isnt that far from stock...

although my maths (if u can call it that) isnt much to go by rofl

That must be because of the larger exhaust which is fitted.. less restriction.

Starion boost guages are measured in kg/cm2 which is almost the same as bar, but slightly off.

1 kg/cm2=14.222psi
1 bar=14.503psi

My dash has 'kg/cm2' written on it next to the boost guage, it reads ~0.8 which is ~8psi on my aftermarket guage. Well it did when it was working (for 15 minutes :( )

8psi=0.56kg/cm2 - so that shows you the inacurracy of the guage, and also the fact mine is digital doesn't help - e.g. 0.6 is displayed as 0.8.

Also, androoz, boost is when your turbocharger is forcing air in to the engine, instead of the engine sucking it in (vacuum). I imagine by 'boosting' you mean 'raise the boost level'.

The car will be reading 0.7kg/cm2, which is probably what mine reads also, however I have a digital dash and I only get displays in 0.2 increments (e.g. its one of 0.25vac,0,0.2,0.4,or 0.8)

To find your true boost level, buy a boost guage, they're quite cheap, and the only hard thing about the install, is getting the pipe through the firewall and up behind the dash.

To raise the boost, just get a basic boost controller (around $80), it vents a little bit of air from the vac line that feeds the wastegate, causing the wastegate on the turbo to open later. General practice has shown, a factory Starion will handle up to 12psi, sometimes more, sometimes less. If the boost is set too high, the fuel system can not keep up, the engine leans out, and you get detonation - ouchies.

To install a cheapo boost controller, you cut the vac line that goes in to your turbo's wastegate, then just plug the controller in between the two lines. Semi decent ones will have instructions anyway, and generally have the 'one turn = one psi' setup. <--- if your car has had the boost raised, then there will be something like this on that line

He's just being a smartass :)

In your first post you said 'has anyone tried boosting their car'

Boosting a car means 'steal a car'
What you meant was 'raise the boost' or 'give it more boost'
