CUSTOM EXHAUST MANIFOLD

Post by davidbek95 »

IS IT WORTH PUTTING ON A CUSTOM EXHAUST MANIFOLD OR LEAVING IT WITH THE STANDARD MANIFOLD WITH A ADAPTOR PLATE FOR A DIFFERENT TURBO.

might seem like a stupid Q. but how much extra kw does a custom manifold give over standard

Equal length manifold, 20HP atw extra over cast.

Slightly better torque aswell and turbo spool up.

Actual test run......but dont expect the same results 'cause every car is different.

It has to do with pressure being equalised through all 4 cylinders, ie shortest runner causing excessive friction/pressure on momentum of psitons/crank etc.

It depends on the design. Just because it is custom made doesn't automatically mean that it will make additional power/torque or decrease lag. I am still using the standard exhaust manifold, ported and with an adaptor flange welded onto it. The fairly large turbo I have bolted to it (54mm rear wheel, 60mm front) still spools up around the 2,500 mark and makes full boost by 4,000, with the tuning and cam needing attention.

David, I would reccomend that you fit the bigger cooler before you go to the expense of fitting a custom exhaust manifold. if and when you do decide to get an exhaust manifold made up, make sure that you go to someone who has made one for a Starion/Mitsu before and can ensure that you will reap some significant power gains from it.

Charlie.

Doesn't have to be custom made, just equal length and really well made.

I've seen yours and if you took the same welding course as scum, then I'ld suggest that you make it up yourself and take it to a local welder to weld it up, would be worth the extra bob imho :D

So where do we get these off-the-shelf, equal-length, really well made, and non-custom bolt-on Starion exhaust manifolds that will give a 20HP@wheels gain? :D

The design isn't hard, get the mandrel bent pipes yourself, line it all up, make a good collector and get someone to weld it all up, about $400 tops me thinks......

Heres a pic,
