starion steering

Post by scum »

how bad is it and what would you fix / get rid of / change or tune in the steering?

Mine is only wobbly when the power steering fluid is cold, turn the wheels once or twice and its fine.

Good wheel resistance, good response (only have to turn the wheel a little to go around a corner), wicked turning circle, no leaks or problems.

Factory steering wheel is only a little bit bigger than an average Momo wheel.

I wouldn't change anything unless forced to - e.g. 4WD

My car has only 139,000 on the clock, the faults it has have been caused by previous owner thrashing the hell out of it, and leaving it to rot for 6 months.

The steering i've allways found to have no feeling in it, lots of slack (probably due to being old).
Why didn't they put a rack and pinion in there?

scum - I think you should maybe drive my Starion :D it has a very firm feel. The steering is showing no signs of age.

Mine is the opposite of what Chris said :D

The only ass I have, is trying to turn the car when engine is off, e.g. towing or rolling down my drive when Im out of gas - it basically just really really doesn't wanna.

ok, i admit, the starion out of any steering box car is probably the better one to have but its still a steering box. these belong in trucks. my starion has a recon box and is the tightest steering box i have ever used, all new ball joints and nolathane bushes plus the little rubber thingy in the coulomb has been repacked with rubber so its like new, so i cut it off with the grinder!! HARHAR! no rubber crap in my steering thank you! even with all this it still felt like the steering was connected via lackybands.

anyway, i know its not BAD like a rental go-kart but lets face it, even a good one is not good. i just wanna know if there is anything else i should change while i am at it. no one has bump-steer? vibrations? funny little steering things they dont like? i would hate to finish this then find it does something that i could have easily fixed while i was there.

Well there was a difference in the power steering between 82 and 83 (the 83 pump has a smaller pulleyand a smaller pump)

My steering is just fine.. Just a little slack but that is hardly noticeable.
But I must add I like the steering of my Eclipse feels better.

My steering column squeaks and it annoys the crap out of me, other than that it steers like a go-kart. Very rarely understeers. I must admit, the best steering i have felt is in NachoMan's red staz, it literally is like changing scenery immediately and exactly when you want it to. Alot of it has to do with front suspension too.

Hahaha
My change scenery wheel. I love it.
The stock Starion Wheel is shite! It feels like you're driving a truck! That was the first thing I changed when I bought my Staz.
Mine is a bit heavy sometimes when it first starts up, but that has to do with the fluid not being at op temp, and not enuff initial pressure in the system.
My steering wheel occaisionally has spastic episodes. Those who have been in the car with me will know what I'm talking about...Steve. : )

My steering is good once the car warms up, I have a little slack but not really noticable, I can make the thing do circles still so i guess its ok.

However I think Rack and Pinion is a good idea... anyone up for a conversion.

Mine would have a good 10deg of play either way before the car actually starts to turn, so 20deg all up. its pretty nasty.

mmmmm rack... well, all is going good on whatever Mark number i am up to. i think this one may work but i cant make kits for it, sorry :( but what i can do is provide a list of bits and measurements and some instructions later is anyone wants. but i suggest waiting until my car is finished and i drive it, it might do something..... weird.
