Most starions don't need an LSD.

Post by David »

Sad but true. Most people who drive Starions really don't need an LSD. Some interesting Starion trivia.

4 out of 5 people with Starions who have LSDs have open diffs. The LSD is all in their mind... (This based on the fact that out of around 10 people who told me they had LSDs, in the end, only 2 actually did).

You can drift a Starion with an open diff. They drift pretty well. A little harsh on the recovery though, and harder to maintain, but it is possible.

Starions handle quite well on dirt/gravel with an open diff. This often leads many people to beleive they have a LSD when they don't. Unfortunately, not all drivers handle as well on gravel :(

Starion Open Diffs are damn strong. Much stronger than most cars. I've never seen a broken one yet.

Starions have an 8" crown wheel. JDs have an 8.5 inch crown wheel.

Most Starions are 3.545 ratio. JDs and some JBs are 3.909. You can fit Scorpion diff bits without too much trouble. JD diff housings can take Pajero bits. A JA housing will also take Pajero bits and even LSDs with some machining. JD diffs are also large enough to install a Detroit locker. Coltspeed made his own.

Starions have 3 different sized half shafts, but nearly all are the smaller type. If you ever find one to prove me wrong, call me and I might buy them from you. ;) Be careful when you buy an LSD.

US Diffs do not bolt straight up to AUS starions in all cases.

A whole heap of Starion LSDs dissapearred when their owners serviced their vehicles. This lead to increased rarity.

Very few people can tell the different diffs apart by sight. This goes for some of the Ralliart people. I've seen a Ralliart specialist make this mistake before.

No Starion I have ever heard of has a Torsen LSD. They are all clutch.
A torsen LSD would be much better for most people on this forum. (unless you drive on loose sand/gravel).

Not everything you hear about Starion LSD trivia is true....

Anyway, I've always wondered about installing an Air-Locker. Would be really interesting. Lock it for straight/offroad. Open for road. ARB make these and could probably quote you.

Finally, LSDs are available. You can get one on short notice. They are just expensive. But if you have cash, you can have an LSD. Just ask Coltspeed or some of the Ralliart people around. If you are serious (several thousand dollars serious) then it probably won't be a problem. You may not get a Starion LSD, but if you have enough, then it's not a problem.

Most serious Starion racers know where to get a LSD from. Often they just don't tell anyone where it is. Usually the person who has it is asking just a little bit too much and the racer doesn't need it yet.

Most of the time, they are only considered rare because people want to buy them for around $200 to $300 - And there aren't enough up for sale for this to happen too often.

If you want one like this, visit every Starion for sale. Take note of it's rego, etc. Check if it has an LSD. If it doesn't have a warning LSD sticker in the driver side door, it's not likely. Even if it does, it's still not that likely. But when you find it, buy it. Someone selling an old beaten up Starion for $800 will usually let you swap diffs for a few hundred if you do the work and fix their car back up.

Finally, the only way you can know for certain if a car has an LSD? Look inside the diff housing.

The quick check involves jacking up both rear wheels. Put the car in Neutral. Grab the wheel on one side and spin it. If the other wheel rotates in the same direction, it's probably a LSD. If it goes in the other, then it's probably open. This test is not perfect.

Well I honestly didn't think they werr that rare... although I have one (100% sure on that) although in saying that mine will need an overhaul in a few months.

Getting a custom brass button clutch Installed on thursday by rod & shane jones, i am hoping this fixes my issues with launching and clutch feel after the clutch gets hot. (my fluid level is good, and i have tried a number of different DOT's)

Also waiting on a few asthetic things to make the staz look alot sweeter :)

Oh the joy!
