rings?

Post by robert26t »

hey guys i have a very similar situation with the smoke as does tom in a fourum below. what happends is there is a shitload of white/maybie blueish smoke when i rev it out the tailpipe. I cleaned the PVC Valve on the top of the rocker cover and that reduced the smoke alot. When i take the oil cap off when the engine is running there is a lot of smoke/ compression blowing out at me :? which indicates that its either the turboo seals, rings, or the valvle stem seals/guides. I was quoted on getting the engine rebuilt with over size pistons all new bearing etc for $1750 and i was quoted for just the head to be done for $250. but i dont want to spend $1750 on a rebuild if i dont have to especially cuz i have rego due today and i need the money. how coould i find out whats causeing this? also because of the compression in the sump its causing oil to leak out all the seals which gave the pigs a invertaion to defect me the other day 2 :glare:

Cheers,

Rob

a compression test will determine if its rings or not. basically if its the turbo there will be lots of oil in your cooler piping (x-over pipe) and if its a ring you'll have one piston with really really low compression compared to the other 3. i had both

i did the test the results were piston 1: 25psi 2: 140psi 3: 125psi 4: 150 psi.. after doing the same test after putting a couple squirts of oil on top of the pistons the results were the same so that means its the valves. but the rings are looking a bit stuffed.. there is oil in my intake but :( hopefully that is the cause. im ripping the head off now to get it reconditioned, ill c what happens then

That No.1 cylinder is very low. I would suspect a cracked ring land on No.1 piston.

And the others are rather high... Check how thick your head is. Should be 90mm.

If it's 89, be worried. If it's 88, throw it away.

If your compression is too high, you may have had detonation leading to failure of #1.

I allways thought you should get something around the low 120's on a compression test? Isn't that right? I'm around 118-120 for each cylinder

compresion

Ive got 155 psi in 1 2 3 but no.4 is at 125. thats just head gasket, cant keep boost in for some reason. Time for new motor the one thats in it at the moment has to be on its last legs.
Seeing how long it will go for me, so far its been like that for 12 months, it dosn't want to die.

p.s.

this is what i traded in to get the starion. what youse think of this? (i kept the system)
