Since I have both sitting here in my garage, I thought I'd post up photos to compare the small and large 4 bolt Starion diffs.

Yep. The housing is slightly larger to accomodate the larger diameter ring gear. The torque tube is therefore shorter so that both diffs are interchangeable.

No, I don't believe so.

I haven't actually tried, but I believe the small one has a 180mm ring gear and the big one is 200mm.

The drive shafts are interchangeable, but the centres are not.

is it true that the big diff wad only found in some jb's and all jd's ?

In Aus yes. Found in widebodies and other narrowbodies overseas too.
