Know this is probably a difficult question to be posing on a starion site! and possibly will receive biased answers but hoping someone will have some actual experience with soarers and can give unbiased advise

they're quickish, they're a bloody heavy car. i've driven a few, they're rather barge-like compared to a starion.

206 at fly = ~160 at wheels-ish?

don't forget it's old and tired, so will be less

and the auto doesn't help much either eh?

the soarers were built to be smooth and cruisy, not really quick and sporty.. so they don't 'feel' fast

then again, the starion doesn't feel fast when i'm driving it :S when i first got it i was cruising down the road and my head almost went out the window on a curve in the road, and when i looked at the speedo i realised i was doing 100 in a 60 zone.. i swear it didn't feel like 100 :P

thrash have you driven or been in a 1JZ-GTE powered soarer? I have and I can tell you they don't feel like they have alot of weight as people make them out to be. Remember I proved earlier they are much lighter than people thought, with most 1JZ-GTE powered models weighing in under 1600kgs. The difference is the JZ has torque right from the get go, start accelerating moderately and it gets moving quickly - the Starion (especially with TC06) really has to get up in the revs before it feels powerful, and then it's all over by 6000rpm.. and also a Starion is always going to be older than Soarer so surely they would be even more so tired.

206kW in a 1600kg car or 125kW in a 1300kg car (the Starion).. which do you think is going to be quicker?

If your gtx's gearbox is good and you can get a motor for $500 I would fix that, then you can sell/trade on another car. Normally once the other car is purchased the old broken car never gets repaired. + its the cheapest option.

Before buying a Soarer speak to an couple of auto electricans about them.
They are luxury car and you should wonder why all of them are so cheap.

I worked for Lexus in the mid 90's importing rebadging and selling these Soarers, I like them but have seen massive money poured into them, even back then.

The Starion seems like a good buy but as you say without inspecting first could be risky, accepting a low offer might mean it needs work that the owner isn't prepared to do before next WOF time.

Good luck anyway whatever decision is made.

um firstly yes the soarer has done 240 000 so tired, maybe? But then starion is 1983 so just plain old? Then again this starion from what i can see from auction and hear from talking to the guy is a very very tiday car that has very obvioulsy been looked after [ apart from the idiot who cut the springs?] If i was to get it checked im sure it will be warrantable once it has new springs but then again cant be sure till someone has a looksie. He put it up for auction when wof was only 2 months old, was up there for awhile and now been waiting for money from me so it expires end of june i think.

The soarer had some power on the test drive! no disputes over that.

Then again if i remember right i think i would find the starion more fun to drive?

Fixing the gtx is just a mish and ill miss out on starion but im really considering it now, if i didnt have to pay a grand to get new engine in id do it in a flash, get it warranted and eventually sell and make all my money back

To the guy that knows his soarers , do you know what they are like on gas ? My man says will be just the same as starion? Then again gtx cheapr then both

well they really aren't spectacular - 2.5L twin turbo + auto + heavy body will give you an average of 12-13L/100km - about the same as a VR-4 Legnum for example.

If you are concerned about fuel economy definitely go for the Starion, mine with a TC06 turbo would barely come on boost at open road cruising speed and I could get about 8L/100km out of it.

I have a MIVEC Galant as a daily driver which is cheap to run that I clock up all my kms in, so I don't really mind what my VR-4 or the Eterna uses fuel wise. It's all about smiles per gallon rather than miles per gallon for me.

Whatever car i get its going to be my only car, daily driver with the kids and visitng mates, trips to auckland on occasion etc

Based on your recent comments I don't believe the Starion or the Soarer are for you. Turbo cars are not cheap to maintain nor are they cheap to drive (I get the same km's out of the 75L tank of my starion that I do out of the 55L tank of my mazda. Yes you can drive around without using the turbo to save the gas but then whats the point in having a turbo).

Given that you want a "reasonably cheap to drive", "daily driver with the kids" and don't have any more money to "sink" into the car, then go for something that isn't going to cost you in the long run, look at a Twin Cam Corolla. I love my Starion and think it's the best, but it's not a car to own on a budget (and I think that's the same with the Soarer).
