two years plus
I figure my car will own me $20k when I'm finished with it.
If I had to sell it, I might get $8k to $10k for it? It would be worth more in parts..
But I also consider this car a hobby. And $20k - $8k = $12k out of pocket spread over 6 years is only $2k a year...
That's cheaper than being a smoker or heavy drinker.

1985 JB Starion #157
The truth is no one will pay that for a starion. Look at the blue twincam staz for sale for 8k, with a gt30, paint, rims and coilovers. If I had to sell it, I might get $8k to $10k for it? It would be worth more in parts..
I bought a complete mpi jb with a e6x, lsd and a big16g for 3k. There is just no value in these cars! As Tomsun is saying, you need to write it all off as a hobby or in thrash's case a expensive learning experience.
lol, if all it was to be was a learning experience for me i would have sold it a year and a half ago, after i'd learnt the lesson :P

hardly any of them are "car guys" to begin with, so.....I was reading somehwere that one of the common things among thee wealthy is that they do not spend big on their cars.. they may have really nice cars.. things that you and i can only dream of, but it's a very tiny tiny portion of their income that goes into buying the car..
Did you also read that many of them loose half their worth in a divorce ?
That must suck! You think they ever got a good return on that investment ?
Ever notice how many of them are extremely miserable.
To me, life is all about being happy. If a project car can make you the happiest, for the least amount invested. Build it
When my wife commneted about spending on my 'projects'(the other woman), my response;
1. not a dollar of her money
2. predictable, makes me happy.... without the dramas or the bullshit.
Now go away :)

Dave thats exactly what I was getting at. I would rather have the fun now. :beerredzone wrote:WidebodyWoody wrote:Yeah you see the problem with that thinking is what if you don't ever earn that kind of money. Then you missed out on the cars.
yeah the main problem with that thinking is that when you've got heads down bums up working your ass off earning money geting setup etc, you hook up with a chick, then get married, have kids, buy a house etc, and before you know it you're in your 40's and frustrated coz u havnt had much fun.
then the mid life crisis hits and the wife leaves you coz u start spending the money she wanted to spend buying jewelery on "a shitty old car".
f*&k that, own the car first, dont sell it, that way when you can afford to spend big $$$ at least it was always in your posession. with women i've found its all about precedence......
Oh an you can still have the marriage and home. You just need to find a woman who will let you spend the money on the car :D

it cost me 900 nz$ and $50 for the manual conversion.
total spend including price of car, petrol, servicing, maintenance, modifications, registration: nz$4.5k.
petrol and registration was nearly 3k of that
dont know why i sold it.

I figure the costs of my JA rebuild so far are as follows
Car $7,000 ( dont ask )
Respray $3,000
Flav ECU $370 ?
Donor car to get turbo, intercooler etc $1,500
DVD/GPS $550
Installation $150
Steering wheel $450
Seat repairs $75
Decals $250
Oils etc $150
Misc $500
Other donor car with LSD and rebuilt motor $1,500
Motor replacement $300
Clutch $185
Still to spend $3,000 Simmons V4's
All up around $20,000 finished..........worth every cent in my opinion, wouldnt want any other car and I mean ANY other car.

ive started working out costs of everything i want to do to my new staz and im well over $40k and $15k of that is just engine. the way i look at it is this, a car you drive daily is a necessaty a car you build is a hobby, now im as sure as sh!t i wouldnt go out and buy a new car for $40+k but spend $40-50k over 5-10years on a car i love the look of and the handling well worth my time effort and money. and if you spend that sort of cash you do it to something you keep cause you'll never get your cash back.
he who dies with the most toys wins!!!!!!

You've also got to look at the depreciation of a new car. If you bought a new MX5 today and it cost you $50k ? keep it for 4 years and you have a car worth $25k. And is it the sort of car you REALLY want ? I'm not kidding and I may sound absolutly crazy but there isnt any other car on the road that I REALLY want. Sure wome are nice, far better drives than an old starion but does it have my interest ? Do I look at it's 27 year old lines and enjoy the craziness of the 80's design ? No I figure $20k for something which I REALLY enjoy and will never sell is a damn good investment.
Yeah it simply comes down to how much you love the car.
Im not gonna start adding up how much ive spent on it, because frankly:
a) i dont want to know
b) my mrs would kill me if she knew :)
If what i spent on the car ever impacted on our lifestyle, then fair enough there would be a problem, but since i never let it get to that state as far as im concerned its no issue.
And im sure the mrs is happier knowing im playing with the car than playin up!!!!!! :D

lol its all good i'm up to about 40K in a gemini :)
and most people will still look at it as being a cheap shit car but when i bought it for the express intention of doing exactly this to it, i knew i'd never be selling it.
