Finally some numbers!
Finally some numbers!
So I finally bit the bullet after running the engine back in again and got some tuning done. Pretty happy with what it put down and cant wait to get some dry weather to see the improvement. I was advised to stick to about 16psi but can't tell on the sheet? :beer

that curve is the reason why i like twin cams so much :)

the dohc turbo 4g63 was out and about in 1987.. they should have made the effort put them in the 87 - 89 starions instead of just giving up on the car.. or at the very least given the later models mpi..
how the hell does a van get mpi and a supercar doesn't????? :glare:

Dave can you or N E body overlay the Kit dyno graph over this one so you can explain the pros & cons to us all ??????????????????redzone wrote:that curve is the reason why i like twin cams so much :)
I've had mine since 03 07 92

kit's curve would be VERY similar to this one, but nick's engine is a STOCK evo3 motor, apart from a metal head gasket and POSSIBLY mild cams. they arent evo3 part numbers on em, they might be NA cams. but yes, untouched ports etc, no where near the work needed to get the same numbers out of a twin cam as it takes to do it with a single cam.
and the point i was making about this particular dyno sheet is look at the area under the curve. THATS where the power is. not some little spike towards the end..

'work' is from a mechanics point of view.. 'cost' would be from an owner's point of view.. :Predzone wrote:no where near the work needed to get the same numbers out of a twin cam as it takes to do it with a single cam.
so.. wouldn't it end up costing just about the same whether you slap a dohc head on a staz block or stick to the sohc?

you have to look at the bigger picture. either engine you've gotta do an exhaust manifold as no one makes them. if you're chasing big power you're best to do an engine build, and the twin cam parts are cheap as chips, so it doesnt cost much more to do a twin cam if you're building an engine. the only real extra cost is in water fittings and power steering bracketry etc, but i have cheap easy solutions for that which will be shown soon :)

redzone, if someone came to you with a stock standard starion and said "i want you to build this car to produce xxx rwkw. do you think i should go for a twin cam setup or stay with the single cam if i don't want any more than xxx rwkw?"
at what point would your answer change between twin cam and single cam? I mean to say, what would the 'xxx' value for rwkw be at which point any lower and you'd recommend sohc and any higher and you'd recommend dohc?

If you have a stock starion, it would work out about the same price for a twin cam setup, as it would be to do an mpi setup when you factor in the cost of building a forged engine.thrash wrote:redzone, if someone came to you with a stock standard starion and said "i want you to build this car to produce xxx rwkw. do you think i should go for a twin cam setup or stay with the single cam if i don't want any more than xxx rwkw?"

The point of difference would depend on how much work you have done to the engine. If you already spent money on an mpi setup it would be silly to take if off for a twin cam setup if you could make similar power with the sohc. Or if you spent money to get custom forged pistons to suit the sohc then whats the point of spending more to build it with dohc pistons. Thats why before you start modifying you need to think about what your goals are, that way it will save you money in the long run. b
