The pics you attached are the stock starion pistons with the one intake valve relief, where is the vr4 ones have two intake valve reliefs but are a better design of pistons. Do a search for vr4 pistons to give you an idea about the pros and cons of using the vr4 pistons.

Oversizing refers to how much bigger the piston is to a stock one, its measured in either thou or mm, so a 20 thou o/s piston is 0.5mm wider than a stock piston. Reason for oversizing is the process of preparing your block you need to hone and bore the cylinder which increases the width of the cylinder hence you need to go the o/s piston. Of course this is just a simplified explantion of it.

Also btw i have a set of cast vr4 ones for sale too

Depending on your desired application, you can go for two choices. 1) If your power levels aren't above 350hp and you have a good tune, go the VR4 pistons. They are cheaper, and quite good. OR 2) Go the safer road and buy a set of Forged pistons. Looking around $500-800 for a good set, depending on brand. You can also get these from the states much cheaper, but with the rate now a days, it would be easier to get them direct from here.

Oh ok thanks for explaining I had a faint idea of what it was but ot sure, that's what you guys are here for right :D . anyway, I was hoping to give it a bit of stick later as I go, but where would be the best place to find a set of forged pistons, as I am in Tassie, and wouldn't have the foggiest.

As mentioned you can buy them from ebay from the states, even with the the lower rate its probably still cheaper to do it that way. Just make sure you get the ones with the 21mm gudgeon pins.

Yeah you definetly have to stick with named brands. The store I bought from actually gave you ratings on which brands were good for which HP. They weren't trying to sway you to one brand or another because they were all priced equally. I can try and find it for you

Hi guys, was thinking of going the VR4 Piston route, just wondering on who's got the best and what's going on proce wise, and also do they fit the existing starion rods, and if there was any other unfo that I needed would be good. don't wanna have big power, just cruise then bit of boot then cruise again lol

rods

Post by 4gpwr »

I would recomend aftermarket rods , a set of scat rods are cheap , not to far of the price of proper reco rods , rods are a very hard woking part , even if they are recoed ect , they still fail , go out of round ect . Go with new.
