yeah that was me.
Are you able to help me out with the above questions I have asked regarding flywheels/starters/clutches.

Cheers

lummy should, he got one before me. I haven't picked mine up yet, sorry mate. I am planning on using vr4 flywheel and pressure plate and a toyota clutch plate (with the right diameter to suit the flywheel). Dellow said that they can modify the spigot bush.

SIR wrote:Hi Guys

I just ordered one of these dellow bellhousings that converts a VR4 narrow block to W series Toyota box that I am fitting into my improved production 1976 Lancer race car.

how does the supra box go for clearance in the lancer tunnel ?
reason I ask is the my GE sigma runs a small tunnel about the same size as a lancer and even a boag warner 5 speed doesn't fit with out some hammer work
and I have a customer W58 on the floor here and it looks a bit big to fit

as for flywheels

the new one is lighter and will use a tilton race clutch

I'll try to answer your questions, but keep in mind, my set up is pretty unique, here's why -

I have a 4G63 VR4, narrow block motor. When Barney first put this car together, he put a conversion plate on it in order to run the bigger Starion flywheel and also to utilise the Starion gearbox, therefore allowing a bigger clutch than the VR4 flywheel could accomodate.

When I wanted to convert to a Supra gearbox, instead of removing the conversion plate, I opted to get a bellhousing that fitted the conversion plate so that I could continue to run the bigger flywheel and bigger clutch.

So, when I did the conversion, I didn't need to modify or change the starter motor, I needed a smaller internal diameter for the spigot bearing, which I just achieved by inserting a spacer, I needed a new centre for the clutch friction plate (I ended up just replacing the friction plate) and the old Hydrualic Starion clutch set up was retained. The only other thing I had to do was to make a custom rear cross member for it, which is covered elsewhere in this thread.

Of course, you need to modify or build a new tailshaft too. The W5* gearbox is slightly shorter than the Starion box, so in most cases, you will need to have a new tailshaft made for you.

I haven't lined it up but it will definently need some hammer work. What flywheel is that, Starion?

The bellhousing arrived from dellow today, here are some pictures. It is not as clean finish as I thought it would be I still have to clean up some of th flash on the inside and grind some metal off the back of the leg where the pivot ball goes for the clutch fork as it was fouling on the gearbox. The one made in the USA looks a lot better finished.

I don't have an engine at the moment so I cannot figure out the flywheel and clutch, I will call dellow tomorrow and see if they have figured it out yet.

it my narrow block 4g54 flywheel that just uses a std sized 2 Lt sigma clutch but I had the diapham changed to the same as a 1 tonne holden - for a bit more clamp presure and had a 4 button solid centre fiction plate made
that was my heavy flywheel 4.8 Kg with the ring gear fitted where as the new one is over a Kg lighter and will use a tilton 7 1/4 clutch
total flywheel + clutch will weigh 5.7 Kg
and the good thing is that it will bolt up to my twin cam turbo ( 4g61T )that is to replace the 2.6 some time next season

you dellow bellhousing looks like a sigma bolt patten my guess is you will be able to use a magna reduction drive starter onto a sigma 2 lt ring gear
and in fact a 2 Lt sigma flywheel ( although I'm not keen on cast flywheels )

is there anything wrong with doing this? what did you make the spacer out of, brass or aluminium or something?

No if the od of the new spigot bearing is smaller than the recess just get a sleive made that fits over the new bearing and into the space where the old sb was & problem solved :D

no don't have a new spigot bearing, the ID of the vr4 sb is larger than what it needs to be for the supra box. so the sleeve would be going inbetween the spigot and the input shaft? don't know if this makes any difference.

Tom if you go to a bearing specialist they should be able to supply a bearing with the right id to fit the imput shaft then get a reducer slieve for the od of the sb if needed to fit the new sb in place
Take your old sb's with you so they can mike them up
