Aligning engine to gearbox!

Post by Station »

Having difficulties aligning the engine to the bellhousing on the gearbox.
I think I may have broken the release bearing, or the cylinder on the clutch, which I'm putting down to 'learn by your mistakes', so not too worried if it is broken.

I moved the engine (with the clutch on) into the bell housing, simple as that, but it wouldn't wholly go in. What should I do, in theory, when I get to this stage? Thanks!!

Make sure there are no alignment pegs sitting in both sides of the box and block in the same holes.

Clutch is the one that came on the side of the engine, it's not new. ;)

You have a jack under gearbox?

Put it in 4th gear, hand brake on. Get a spanner for the crankshaft bolt.

Turn crank slowly an apply brute force, when engine no longer turns it has started on the spline and you can slide it home.

Make sure first that the clutch plate is in allignment and you have a little grease on the splines of the gearbox. I would probably fit a new plate while the engine is out, its cheap and easy.

yea make sure gearbox is going in on the right angle

easiest trick to line the splines up i reckon is just leave it in nuetral and pop the dshaft in then spin that slowly

I got the gearbox hooked up, just persistance paid off. I did instinctively turn the crankshaft, so I think that helped! I am totally covered in bruises.
