What's a Starion "Bavaria"

Post by panda »

I recently acquired an australian built 1884 JA, but there is a "Bavaria" badge on the rear of the hatch. Is this authentic, as I've not seen this before.

To my knowledge mate the only cars to carry the BAVARIA moniker were
the BMW 2002 from 66-76 I think, and the E3 from 68-77.
Hard to see why a japanese brand would use the name of a european city on one of thier cars, unless it was a marketing push into europe.
Then again I can't really understand where or why they came up with some of the names they did either.

Here's a photo of the mysterious badge. Has anyone seen this before. My guess is that this car was once owned by a 'bavarian' & this was his way of customising !

A bit hard to make out, but this looks like the answer to your question, from a 1973 BMW Bavaria:

That last BMW is one of these:

Once upon a time, BMW actually made cars as cool looking as these, before they employed a blind designer, and later on, even worse, Chris Bangle!!

leave it on, imagine being pulled over for speeding and the cop writes you down as driving a 1984 Toyota Celica Bavaria.

Yeah, I had one (they're called 2002's), have always looked for another, but prices for them now have at least tripled in the past couple of years. :(
