Group E Cars revisited " again"

Post by RallyStarion »

Can anyone from the " Good ole' Days" remember if Brad Jones ran a JD Starion in Group E, around 1987 I think. And if so did he punt it into the wall at the end of the staight at Sandown. If the story I heard at the weekend is true, then I think I may have found his car.

Brad made his debut in the Australian Touring Car scene at Bathurst in 1985 at the wheel of Mitsubishi Starion.
Brad competed in the 1986 Japan Touring Car Championship for Mitsubishi
Won the Jackie Chan Trophy at the Macau Grand Prix Meeting in 1987. (Mabey this car)

Not quite the full answer but i shall ask him asap.

Yes he ran a JD in 1987 (I actually watched him race it at Amaroo park) because all GroupE cars must be unleaded fuel from that year. Australia introduced unleaded fuel end of 1986.
This meant that JA's and JB's could no longer be raced so this was the year Des (the car in my avitar) stopped racing :(
The JD was not really competitive because of the small TD05 turbo, even with the intercooler.

As I recall Brad was the only guy to get a JD as this car was provided by Mitsubishi.
So in one year because of the rules 99% the GroupE Starions stopped racing :(

So yes he did drive a GroupE JD in 1987 but I do not know if the car hit the wall at Sandown that year?

Tony Scott ran a JD at Lakeside in 87 as well, I can not remember any other JD's. I have a pic of Brad's JD so will post it up. As a note of interest Brad tried to sell me the LSD out of his JD for $3000!!!!! no thanks MATE.

Isn't Tony Scott a Hollywood Director?
Didn't he direct Top Gun? :D
Sorry...

How cool would it be though, owning a former JD racer!
As long as the price was right though...

Tony Scott also raced a RX3 coupe at lakeside as a sports sedan or club car. I am not sure but his brother was Garry who also raced the Ralliart Starion a bit until he stoved the front in at Oran park during a practise day.

The car is behind a factory, out in the weather, with bad rust in the panel above the grill and the top of the L/H door. Could not see much more as the grass is nearly a foot and a half high and the top of the car has a tree growing ontop and over it. Could not get to the back of it at all, or look under the floorpan to see if it had boltholes for the rollcage, diff size etc. The car is back in road trim and the intercooler is a modified JB version with the outlets rewelded so the intercooler now sits vertically with factory piping to it. The entire front of the car in the engine bay is finished in a flat grey paint, as fixed in Japan apparently, and is showing signs of deterioation.
The chap who own's it says he bought it off Brad Jones in the 80's and used it as a daily transporter.
